The Eselsteich is a pond on the south-eastern edge of the Amtsberge in the Feldmark of the city of Dassel in the district of Northeim in southern Lower Saxony in Germany .

description

The pond is fed directly by a spring , it has less than a hectare of water at a depth of about one meter. The draining water of the Bremke flows into the Bewer near Deitersen .

In the lowlands east of the Amtsberge, the donkey pond is only one of several ponds, but unlike the others, it is open to the public. It is a biotope for dragonflies , blue-green damsel , great pitch dragonfly , horseshoe damsel and quadruped have been proven . It is also a destination for walkers. From Hunnesrück it can be reached via the only Eschenallee in the city of Dassels and from the direction of Bierberg via the Höhenwanderweg.

history

The donkey pond is one of the few still waters in this area that has probably been preserved since the Middle Ages , as most of them were closed after their original purpose as cattle trough or fish pond. According to legend, the name is said to have originated from the fact that a donkey standing on a wipe ( Low German : meadow) near Merxhausen sank into a throat and reappeared in the pond, henceforth called donkey pond. The pond apparently served to supply the Hunnesrück Castle on the neighboring mountain with water . No castle well has been found there, and it is assumed that water from the pond was transported with the help of donkeys into a cistern on the castle grounds.

In contrast, the park pond at the Hunnesrück stud farm not far to the east was created in modern times with the use of the Hunnesrück office as a farm yard, and the forester pond, the long pond, the corner pond and the school pond were created to supplement the outer protective walls at the neighboring Erichsburg .
