The Esino at Jesi |
The Esino (ancient name: Aesis ) is an approximately 80 km long river in the Italian region of Marche . On its way to the Adriatic Sea, the Esino flows through the provinces of Ancona and Macerata . The headwaters are on the 1,116 m high Monte Cafaggio. After just a few kilometers, the Esino flows through the town of Matelica at an altitude of 350 m above sea level. After crossing the Parco Regionale della Rossa e di Frasassi National Park through the Gola della Rossa gorge , it reaches the plain off the coast around Jesi and Chiaravalle , before flowing into the sea at Falconara .
The river gives its name to the Esino wine region . In addition, the famous Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica wines grow on the slopes of the river .
