Esmaël Ruti Tavares Cruz da Silva Gonçalves (born June 25, 1991 in Bissau ) is a Portuguese football player . He holds both Portuguese and the nationality of Guinea-Bissau .

Career

Esmaël Gonçalves was born in June 1991 in Bissau , the capital of the African country Guinea-Bissau . At the age of three he came to Portugal with his family. He began his football career at the Boavista Porto youth academy . As a 19-year-old he moved to the youth division of OGC Nice from France. At the club he spent the next three years in the junior teams. On January 30, 2011 Gonçalves made his professional debut against Girondins Bordeaux . In August 2012 Gonçalves moved back to Portugal for Rio Ave FC . From there it was awarded a total of four times in the following three seasons, including FC St. Mirren , APOEL Nicosia , Veria FC and Anorthosis Famagusta . In Scotland, he won the Scottish League Cup with St. Mirren in the final against Heart of Midlothian in March 2013 . In the semifinals, Gonçalves had scored the opening goal against Celtic Glasgow in a 3-2 win, which was also his first in the Saints jersey . In 2013 he also won the Cypriot Supercup against Apollon Limassol during his loan to APOEL Nicosia . After returning to Rio Ave, his contract was not renewed. He then played for a short time with al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Professional League before joining Anorthosis Famagusta. In January 2017, Gonçalves joined Heart of Midlothian for a fee of £ 170,000. A year later, Gonçalves moved to Paxtakor Tashkent in Uzbekistan for a transfer fee of £ 350,000 .
