Essen aviation archive

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Essen Aviation Archive was founded in 1999 by Frank Radzicki.

Emergence

The archive emerged from the "Essen Aviation History Collection", which Radzicki has been running since 1994 together with a companion who is also involved in aviation history, Guido Rißmann-Ottow. This was preceded by a common interest in aviation history from their youth, which was expressed in the collection of photos, drawings and the construction of scale aircraft models (plastic model making). The collection at that time was made public in 1997 at photo exhibitions in the context of public events at the Essen / Mülheim airfield . At that time, historical recordings of Essen / Mülheim Airport and the history of aviation in the region around the city of Essen were presented to the public. In September 1999 there was a separation because of different views on the historical work and organization of the "Essen Aviation History Collection". Frank Radzicki founded the "Essen Aviation Archive". Guido Rißmann-Ottow continued the collection and in 2004 he renamed it “Archive for the History of Aviation in the Ruhr Area”. Already in 2002 Rißmann-Ottow published his own, extensively researched book about early aviation in the Ruhr area against the background of bourgeois social history , which was based on a dissertation he had written with the title Citizenship and Aviation in Essen , completed and submitted in 2001, was based on this topic under the scientific supervision of Wilfried Loth from the University of Essen , i.e. not a book of aviation history in the true sense, but rather to be classified in the social sciences department . This book does not contain any photographs from the early days of aviation in the Ruhr area, but does contain drawings, maps, display diagrams and sketches.

The "Essen Aviation Archive", on the other hand, has the purpose of summarizing all historical aviation data and facts relating to the area of the city of Essen and the surrounding area. One focus is on the collection and publication of historical photographs, so that the "Essen Aviation Archive" can also be viewed as a journalistic archive. Historical events, insofar as they relate to regional aviation history, are documented factually and objectively and, if necessary, also published, i.e. free from any political influence or statement. A publication by the “Essen Aviation Archive” is an illustrated book about Essen / Mülheim Airport with numerous historical photos that was published in March 2005 on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the airport. Another volume with historical photos on the early aviation history in the Ruhr area was published in June 2006. The focus is on the beginnings of aviation in the Rhenish-Westphalian industrial area (Ruhr area) from 1906 to the 1930s. Like the archive on the history of aviation in the Ruhr area, the Essen Aviation Archive is part of the Essen History Initiatives Working Group founded in 1991 . The majority of the stock of photos, specialist literature as well as other documents and documents come from the estate of the local historian Hugo Rieth (1922–2006).
