Ethofumesate is a chemical compound from the group of benzofurans , which was introduced by Schering in 1974 as a selective systemic herbicide .

Extraction and presentation

Ethofumesate can be obtained from 1,4-benzoquinone and isobutanal . In the presence of a base, these react to form a benzofuran, which further reacts with ethanol and methanesulfonyl chloride to form ethofumesate.

use

Ethofumesate works by inhibiting lipid synthesis . It is absorbed through the roots as a soil herbicide.

Ethofumesat is mainly used in pre- and post-emergence to control weeds and broad-leaved weeds in sugar and fodder beet cultivation . Sufficient soil moisture increases the long-term effect.

Dismantling

Ethofumesate is neither poisonous to bees nor to fish. It degrades very slowly in the soil with a half-life of between twelve weeks and more than a year.

Admission

Ethofumesate is approved as an active ingredient in plant protection products in the European Union.
