description

Appearance and leaf

Eucalyptus pileata grows in the form of the mallee - eucalyptus , this is a growth form that is more shrub -shaped than tree-shaped , there are usually several trunks that form a lignotuber ; it grows up to 8 meters high. The bark is smooth and gray, gray-brown, brown, cream-colored or light gray on the entire specimen. There are oil glands in both the bark and the marrow.

In Eucalyptus pileata is Heterophyllie ago. The leaves are always divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is narrowly flattened or channel-shaped. On middle-aged specimens, the leaf blade is lanceolate or ovate, straight, with entire margins and a dull gray-green. The leaf blades, glossy green on the top and bottom, are lanceolate, relatively thick, tapering towards the base of the blade and have a pointed upper end. The raised lateral nerves extend from the median nerve at an acute angle. The cotyledons ( cotyledons ) are upside-kidney-shaped.

Inflorescence and flower

On the side of an inflorescence stem with a width of up to 3 mm in cross section, narrowly flattened or angular, three to seven flowers stand together in a simple inflorescence . The flower buds are spindle-shaped and not floured or frosted blue-green. The sepals form a calyptra that falls off early. The wavy calyptra is hemispherical, as long as the smooth or striped flower cup (hypanthium) and wider than this. The flowers are white or creamy white. The flowering period in Western Australia is February to May or September to October.

Fruit and seeds

The fruit is hemispherical. The disc is indented, the fruit compartments are at the level of the edge or protrude. The seeds are red.

Occurrence

The natural range of Eucalyptus pileata is in the southwest and south of Western Australia , between Kalgoorlie-Boulder , Albany and Esperance , as well as in the western and central sections of the coast of South Australia . Eucalyptus pileata occurs in Western Australia in the independent administrative districts of Coolgardie , Cranbrook , Dundas , Esperance , Kent , Kondinin , Lake Grace , Menzies , Ravensthorpe , Victoria Plains and Yilgarn in the regions Goldfields-Esperance , Great Southern and Wheatbelt .

Eucalyptus pileata grows on red sand soils or red, sandy or stony loam soils over ferruginous sandstone or granite . Eucalyptus pileata can be found on sandy plains or rocky outcrops .

Systematics

The first description of Eucalyptus pileata was made in 1934 by William Blakely in A Key to the Eucalypts , S. 120. The type material has the caption " WA - Desmond, near Ravensthorpe (JH Maiden, November, 1909) " on. Synonym for Eucalyptus pileata Blakely is Eucalyptus pileata subsp. triada Brooker MS.

Limited intergradation was noted between Eucalyptus pileata and Eucalyptus cretata .
