Eugen Sutermeister

Franz Eugen Sutermeister (born November 16, 1862 in Küsnacht ; † June 8, 1931 in Bern ; resident in Zofingen ) was a Swiss engraver, the first Bernese travel preacher for the deaf , carers and poets .

At the age of four, Sutermeister lost his hearing due to meningitis . Out of obedience to his father Otto Sutermeister , he entered an engraving apprenticeship.

Sutermeister's first publication appeared in 1896: Songs of a Deaf and Mute . Sutermeister proved his proven literary language competence, which had to impress especially the hearing.

the tide carries and weighs me in the game, although I have never swum -
Left in a sweet tumble to the waters and the winds,

In 1905 Sutermeister had short sermons printed for the deaf and dumb, and in 1907 he founded the Schweizerische Taubstummen-Zeitung. In 1911 he founded the Swiss Deaf and Dumb Association ; From 1911 he was the central secretary of the Swiss Welfare Association for the Deaf and Mute.

Sutermeister was also the Reformed deaf-mute preacher of the regional church, and worked for magazines such as Schweizer Hausfreund , Neuer Hausfreund , Fürs Heim , etc. In 1912 he was appointed a member of the French Academy .

Sutermeister was married to Susanna Bieri (1863-1935), who stood by his side in his work.

His estate is in the Swiss Social Archives .
