description

Branch with opposite, single, leathery leaves and white flowers.
Branch with opposite, simple, leathery leaves and fruits.

Eugenia reinwardtiana is an evergreen shrub or small tree that reaches heights of about 1.5 to 7 m. The opposite arranged leaves are divided into short petioles and leaf blades. The leathery, simple, dark green leaf blade is 2.5 to 8 cm long and 2 to 6.5 cm wide and pointed-oval. The top of the leaf is glossy and the underside of the leaf is matt. There are five to eight lateral nerves on each side of the clearly visible midrib. The leaf surface is glabrous or slightly hairy along the midrib. The new shoot is pink.

The flowers are on 5 to 25 cm long pedicels individually or in pairs in the leaf axils. A pair with a length of 1 to 1.5 mm smaller cover sheets is hairy shiny or light. The hermaphroditic flower is radial symmetry and four-fold with a double flower envelope . The flower cup is conical, 2 to 3 mm long and hairy brown. The four sepals are circularly fused with the flower base and are unevenly long; one pair 3 to 5 mm, the other 2 to 3 mm. The four white petals are ovate and 6 to 8 mm long. There are about 150 stamens with white stamens and cream-colored anthers .

With a diameter of 1 to 2 cm, the spherical, flattened to egg-shaped berry turns yellow to light red when ripe. Usually only a spherical seed up to 10 mm in size is formed; up to two seeds can also be formed, which are then smaller.

Occurrence

The original range of Eugenia reinwardtiana seem to be the coastal area of the Australian state of Queensland , Papua New Guinea and some tropical Pacific islands; however, it is widespread from Borneo to the Hawaiian Islands.

Their preferred locations are the border area between beach and scrubland, rocky headlands and the coastal forest. Eugenia reinwardtiana can only survive light frosts down to −1 ° C (30 ° F).

Common names

Common names in other languages are Beach Cherry, Cedar Bay Cherry or Nioi ( Hawaii ).

use

Eugenia reinwardtiana is used as an ornamental plant because of its " malleability " and its slow growth .

The fruits of Eugenia reinwardtiana are collected as bush food in Australia .
