Eugenio Berrios

Eugenio Berríos (born November 14, 1947 in Santiago de Chile , † 1995 in Montevideo ) was a Chilean biochemist and member of the Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional (DINA).

Berríos studied biochemistry at the Universidad de Concepción in 1967 and became a member of DINA in 1974 under the code name " Hermes ". He made the explosives for the car bomb in the murder of Orlando Letelier in 1976 . In April 1976, Berríos synthesized the chemical weapon sarin , which, according to his colleague Michael Townley, was used to murder the head of the state archives Renato León Zenteno and the Chilean corporal Manuel Leyton . He made the sarin together with Townley and Gerardo Huber . Berríos may have been involved in the 1982 murder of Frei Montalva , which in 2009 was judged by the Chilean judiciary to be deliberate infection with Staphylococcus aureus .

Berríos was head of the Proyecto Andrea , which was to produce sarin and the biological weapons Bacillus anthracis (anthrax) and Clostridium botulinum (botulinum) on behalf of Augusto Pinochet . According to Manuel Contreras , he was producing cocaine for the US market on Pinochet's behalf at a military facility in Talagante . During the transition to Chile , he was wanted by the police in October 1991 in the course of Operation Silencio for his involvement in the murder of Orlando Letelier in 1976 and in the murder of Carmelo Soria and, with the help of the Chilean military intelligence service DINE , sat down to Uruguay via Argentina from. Berrio's body was found on the beach in Montevideo in 1995 and identified by its teeth, and a few years later by DNA analysis . In 2010, three Uruguayan officers were sentenced to imprisonment for the murder of Berrío in Chile. Contreras said Berríos was still alive in 2006, worked for the Drug Enforcement Administration and attended a relative's funeral in 2004.
