Eurycoma longifolia is a species of plant that belongs to the bitter ash family(Simaroubaceae). It is native to Indonesia , Malaysia , the Philippines , Thailand , Myanmar , Vietnam , Cambodia, and Laos .

Vegetative characteristics

Eurycoma longifolia grows as a shrub or small tree in primary and secondary forests to heights of usually 12 to rarely up to 15 meters. They grow with little or no upright branches.

The leaves are mostly concentrated like an umbrella on the tips of the branches. The 45 to 80 centimeter long leaves are pinnate unpaired. The 20 to 30 pairs of leaflets that are opposite each other are leathery and narrowly elongated.

Generative characteristics

Eurycoma longifolia is dioecious separate sexes ( dioecious ), with female and male flowers on different specimens. The many flowers appear in large, branched, paniculate inflorescences , 50 to 60 centimeters long . The five-fold flowers are hairy glandular. The five petals are purple-crimson. The female flowers have an ovary with a style that ends in a five-lobed stigma, and large staminodes . The male flowers contain five fertile stamens and a sterile pistil. The main flowering period is from June to July.

The egg-shaped stone fruit , 1 to 2 centimeters long and 0.5 to 1 centimeter in diameter, is initially green and later, when it has ripened, dark red. The fruits mainly ripen in September.
