The Protestant cemetery church St. Georgen in Braunfels , a town in the Lahn-Dill district in Hesse , is a late Romanesque building that was rebuilt several times in the 15th and 17th centuries. Until 1583, when Count Conrad von Solms-Braunfels (1540–1592) made the castle church in Braunfels available to the community, St. Georgen served as the town's parish church .

architecture

Romanesque portal on the south side

The late Romanesque nave was probably extended to the north in the Gothic period. A square, recessed choir adjoins it in the east . The rectangular, Romanesque side chapel north of the choir, which was presumably used as a sacristy , has a Gothic groin vault . Choir and band are of a common gable roof covered, at 1857 pointed ridge turret with a weather vane was attached. The eastern side of the gable is made of half-timbered houses .

The two Romanesque portals on the south side still have their medieval iron fittings . The larger portal under the open sign is dated to the late 12th century. It is set in a rectangular frame and is flanked by set columns .

The interior is flat. A pointed triumphal arch leads from the nave into the choir. A narrow gallery forms the western end .
