The Evangelical Augsburg Church in Srokowo ( German Drengfurth ) is a building from 1937. Until 1945 it served as a chapel for the Roman Catholic parish of Rastenburg ( Polish: Kętrzyn ) in East Prussia and is now a branch church of the Evangelical Lutheran parish church in Kętrzyn ( German Rastenburg ) in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship .
Geographical location
Srokowo is located in the northern center of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship on the Omet . It is about 20 kilometers to the southwest to the district town of Kętrzyn (Rastenburg) . The province road 650 runs through the village, which connects Stara Różanka (Alt Rosenthal) near Kętrzyn with Węgorzewo (Angerburg) and Gołdap (Goldap) .
The location of the church is on the south-western outskirts on ulica Łąkowa.
Church building
In 1937 a chapel was built in Drengfurth . Its construction was carried out on behalf of the Roman Catholic parish of St. Katharina in Rastenburg , which hoped that the construction would relieve the burden on the north-east of the then very extensive parish .
The result was a single-nave east-facing building with a western tower . Granite stones formed the building material for the nave and also - up to the ridge height - for the tower, with bricks in the upper part .
The building has a neo-Romanesque architecture.
The interior of the church is covered by a barrel vault. The simply held altar surmounted a large cross on the altar whitewashed wall. A rood screen separates the chancel from the nave. To the right of the altar is the also simple Protestant pulpit directly on the outside wall of the church.
The church has been a Protestant church since 1945, which led to structural changes in the interior.
Parish / parish
Catholic
Before 1945 there were very few Catholics in Drengfurth. In 1925, for example, of the 1603 inhabitants in the city area, only 15 were Catholic. Not far from the former chapel is the former Catholic cemetery.
The parish of St. Katharina with the Drengfurther chapel was incorporated into the deanery of Masuria II (official seat: Johannisburg ) in what was then the diocese of Warmia until 1945 .
When the confessional structure in Drengfurth changed as a result of the war in 1945, the two churches there were swapped between the denominations: when the previously Protestant parish church came to the Catholics, the Protestants received the previously Catholic chapel.
Evangelical
Since the Reformation , the church in Drengfurth, which was founded in the pre-Reformation period, has been shaped by Lutherans. The vast majority of the residents of the extensive parish belonged to her. Flight and expulsion of the local population reduced the number of Protestant residents to almost zero by 1950. The takeover of the previously Catholic chapel more than fulfilled the desire for a church in Srokowo. In this way, over the decades, evangelical worship has been able to develop again. The parish is provided by the parish in Kętrzyn within the Masuria diocese of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland .
