The Protestant church is a listed church building in Gahlen , a district of Schermbeck in the Wesel district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The church was originally the patronage of St. Subordinate to Peter . It emerged from an own church . In 1380 it became a parish church . The parish is one of the oldest parishes of the regional church on the right bank of the Rhine. It originated in the Merovingian - Carolingian times. The congregation became Lutheran in 1552 of its own accord. In 1817 she joined the Union in the Evangelical Church in Prussia . The two-aisled , late Gothic brick church stands directly on the Rehrbach. It was built from quarry stone at the end of the 12th century. The Romanesque defense tower is in front. Remains of the single-nave predecessor church are still preserved in the main nave. The conversion to a cross-rib vaulted church with a choir consisting of a yoke and a 5/8 end was made in 1514. A little later the north aisle was added. During a comprehensive renovation from 1855 to 1857, the sacristy was added to the northern choir corner . The church was damaged in World War II and restored until 1956.

Furnishing

  • A late Gothic wall tabernacle with an eyelash in a rectangular tracery panel and a push-through grille stands on a slender foot in the choir .
  • The carved pulpit in the auricle and cartilage style is from 1654. The original black and red version with gilding is still preserved. Panel paintings depicting the life of Jesus are attached to the pulpit. The sound cover is crowned with a pelican. The pulpit was added in 1855.
