History and architecture

The church, a three-nave , two-bay nave is next to the Ludgeruskirche in Sendenhorst-Albersloh, the only medieval choir tower church in Westphalia . Its oldest components come from a forerunner chapel from the period from 1050 to 1100. The small two-bay hall building on an almost square floor plan, with a tower over the crossing of the choir and a low apse , dates from the first half of the 13th century. As a building material of the present here served greywacke - quarried stone . The sacristy was added in 1653; the spire was renewed in 1751. Under the direction of Ludwig Hofmann, the west building was added from 1912 to 1916.

In the 14th century the Church of the Mother Church in Plettenberg was abgepfarrt and has since independent Baptist church.

The church, known in documents as Kerke Tho Ole in 1391, was a well-known pilgrimage destination in the pre-reformist period . In a shrine in the choir was the head of St. Cornelius , which was carried before a procession every year on Cornelius Day. A sacristy was added in 1653. The tower was raised by one floor in 1751 and the eight-sided helmet was added. From 1912 to 1916 the building was extended to the west.

Inside, square pillars with three half-column templates and bulbous capitals , as are common in the Sauerland, support the vaults . The vault belts are ogival. The choir and the central nave are cross-vaulted , the side aisles , which open into small wall apses, are vaulted with one hip. The colored windows from 1916 are probably works by Otto Linnemann.

At the beginning of the 20th century, remains of old wall paintings were uncovered in the choir and repainted. In 1964 they were uncovered again and restored. The paintings from the middle of the 13th century depict Christ in the mandorla , with the evangelist symbols as the judge of the world . The depictions of saints come from the 15th century. Ornamental paintings of the nave vault show the Soest scheme, as in Maria zur Höhe , a copy from 1907.
