The Evangelical Church Scheidt is a church building in the Saarbrücken district Scheidt within the residential area. It is centrally located a little south of the Kaiserstraße ( B 40 ) on the flank of the Scheidter mountain. In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

The predecessor of today's church was a village chapel built around 1350 without a tower . Until the introduction of the Reformation in the 16th century, Scheidt belonged to the parishes of the St. Arnual Abbey .

After being destroyed in the Thirty Years' War , the church was rebuilt as a baroque hall church between 1737 and 1738 , whereby the Gothic choir of the previous building was retained. A tower was not built. Instead, a wooden frame was used to hold a small bell . Since 1870 there has been a bell tower made of quarry stone in neo-Romanesque style on the north side , which was built according to plans by the architect Karl Memminger. The tower was placed on top of the chancel and the sacristy and not built on a foundation . As part of the construction of the tower, the preserved choir of the previous church was demolished.

On the front gable side, the church was expanded by 8 meters to the south between 1957 and 1958. With the addition of a gallery , the capacity of the seats was increased to 360.

From 1995 to 1997 the outside area was provided with a generous flight of stairs and further open spaces. The construction work was led by the architect Hubertus Wandel (Saarbrücken).

The Gustav-Adolf-Gemeindehaus , built in the late 1960s, and the church in the St. Ingbert district of Rentrisch also belong to the community . The rest of the urban area of St. Ingbert belongs to the regional church in the Palatinate , while the community Scheidt forms the south-western tip of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland .

Furnishing

The large window above the altar and the two (lower) windows in the choir were designed by the Hungarian architect and church window painter György Lehoczky, who emigrated to Saarbrücken after the Second World War, and were installed during the renovation in 1957. The window at the altar is thematically dedicated to the resurrection of Jesus Christ , the two choir windows commemorate the victims of the World War. Two round windows located above the stairs to the gallery depict the reformers Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon .

In the tower there is a clock for all four points of the compass and three bells, the largest of which did not return until 1948, as its predecessor had been melted down for war purposes . They are tuned to the tones “a”, “c” and “d” and consist of a bronze-copper-tin alloy with at least 60% copper.
While the tower was not plastered, the rest of the church is plastered and whitewashed from the outside. The interior of the church is also whitewashed.
