The frigate Zr. Ms. Evertsen (F805) is the fourth air defense and command frigate (LCF) of the De Zeven Provinciën class of the Royal Netherlands Navy .
Surname
The name Evertsen is reminiscent of the Evertsen family from the province of Zeeland , from which many well-known seafarers emerged, especially in the 17th century, some of whom also served in the Dutch Navy at the time. The best known among them are still the lieutenant admirals Johan Evertsen and Cornelis Evertsen .
Ship platform
The De Zeven Provinciën class was developed as part of a trilateral agreement for the development of a joint ship platform between the Federal Republic of Germany , the Netherlands and Spain (" Trilateral Frigate Cooperation ", TFC). In Germany, the class 124 ( Saxony class ) was built under this agreement , in Spain the Álvaro de Bazán class . The Evertsen is one of the two ships in her class that are not specifically designed as a lead ship.
history
The ship was laid down on September 6, 2001 at the Koninklijke Schelde shipyard in Vlissingen in the Netherlands . The launch took place on April 19, 2003. The ship was put into service on July 10, 2005.
In 2007 the ship was part of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG 1). During a mission in the Red Sea , the group took part in a rescue mission for the Yemeni garrison on the island of Jabal al-Tair , which was hit by a volcanic eruption , during which the Evertsen was able to save two people.
In February 2008, the Dutch Navy tested a pre-production model of the helicopter NH90 aboard the Evertsen in Den Helder . Thereafter the ship escorted ships of the World Food Program until July 2008 in order to protect them against piracy off the coast of Somalia .
In the second half of 2009, the ship was used as a flagship in Operation Atalanta . From 2011 to 2014, the Evertsen was repeatedly part of Operation Ocean Shield in the Horn of Africa for several months at a time . From May to August 2012, she served as the operation's flagship.
