Extra (spelling: extra ) was a retail chain with around 250 branches in Germany that has belonged to Rewe since 2009 . On March 16, 2009, all extra stores in Rewe stores except Dortmund and Neumarkt Oberpfalz (Bavaria) were re-flagged. Extra's regional focus was on northern Germany, Berlin, North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. Food made up around 90 percent of the range. Extra ran product programs from leading manufacturers of branded goods and most recently Rewe's own brands such as “ja!”, “REWE” and “REWE Bio”.

Companies

Extra markets could be found in towns and cities with more than 8,000 inhabitants. The branches were mainly located in North Rhine-Westphalia , Rhineland-Palatinate , Lower Saxony and Berlin and were mostly 2000–3000 m² in size. Around 60 Bolle and Comet stores also belonged to Extra and have been part of Rewe since July 1, 2008. They are managed in the franchise system. The respective retailers use the logistics and central purchasing via Rewe, but are self-employed.

history

Former Extra-Markt in Hanover , flagged to Rewe in 2009

The first extra consumer market was opened in 1970 by the Schaper Group in Düren ; the other main branch network was initially limited to Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia . The Schaper group was incorporated into the Asko group in 1987; thus Extra was part of the Metro group since 1996. In 2004 the food companies Real and Extra were merged, but continued to operate separately in the market.

On July 1, 2008, the Cologne retail group Rewe took over the Extra hypermarkets with 9700 employees from Metro AG. The Federal Cartel Office approved the purchase on March 28, 2008 unconditionally. The name Extra disappeared in the period that followed, as did the Comet and Bolle franchise brands, when the markets were changed to Rewe , Toom-Hypermarket and Kaufpark (REWE-Dortmund's sales channel).

Extra hardware stores

After Metro's Extra grocery stores were sold to Rewe, the Extra DIY stores were incorporated into Praktiker . In addition, smaller Praktiker branches were renamed Extra . Some extra markets were operated as franchises.

Extra Future Store

In April 2003, was the Extra Future Store of METRO Group in Rheinberg by Claudia Schiffer , a native of Rheinberg opened. In the Future Store, new technologies and sales concepts should be tried out with real customers in a practical way. The Extra Future Store was replaced by the Real Future Store in Tönisvorst in May 2008 and is now a REWE Center after it had previously been a shopping center .

Test of self-service checkouts

In addition to conventional service tills, self-service tills , so-called self-service tills, have been used in some markets since 2004 . Customers scanned their goods themselves at four terminals and placed them in plastic bags on a scale to check the total weight. One service employee looked after four customers or four terminals at the same time. For example, if items were purchased that were subject to the Youth Protection Act , they had to be approved by the service employee. An alarm system should prevent any theft. After the takeover by Rewe, the self-checkout concept was discarded.
