content

Mr. Shirwood is building a railway bridge over the Swallow River in Apache Territory. Tschomboq, chief of the Comanches , sells the foreign land for rifles and a few barrels of schnapps to the bridge builder. Shirwood hijacks Barumi - that is the son of the villainous chief - the woman Atoka. Winnetou defends the Apache hunting and grazing grounds, is captured by Tschomboq and freed by Old Shatterhand . Barumi joins the Apache chief. Winnetou dies when the bridge is blown up.

Despite their death-defying armed struggle, the indigenous people are being pushed back by the overpowering white settlers. A few years later, a new bridge spanned the Swallow River - built exactly according to Shirwood's plans for the destroyed debut.

shape

Günter Eich rewrote " Winnetou's death " without further ado. The story is framed with a train ride to Old Shatterhands. After five years, the traveler on the drive to Chicago comes across the place where Winnetou had to die in the fight against the pale faces. In this wistful swan song for the free life of men on the prairie, the old shattered hand in the city on Lake Michigan is forced to take a job as a shooter in a circus.

poetry

Günter Eich sprinkles poems in several places in his radio play. In the very first lines of the radio play, the author identifies himself as the Karl May reader he was once:

Remember sometimes
the boy's fantasy ...

reception

After the original broadcast

  • As Reinhard Döhl wrote, on July 18, 1936, the “ Völkischer Beobachter ” is said to have said: “Günther Eich is a good poet who is also familiar with the requirements of a radio play suitable for radio. His broadcasts are small radio events that stand out from the usual daily program. "

After 1945

  • Wessels sees the audio piece as “a bitter criticism of civilization and progress”. In his subsequent review, he goes into “the affinity for National Socialist ideas” and refers to studies by Würffel and Cuomo in this regard .
  • Wagner briefly addresses controversies among literary scholars regarding the characters Winnetou and Shirwood.
