history

FC Mendrisio coat of arms (until 1982)

FC Mendrisio was founded in 1912 , but was dissolved again in 1918. But just two years later, in 1920, it was re-established as AC Mendrisio - the club went bankrupt in 1923.

In 1924 it was re-established, this time under the name FC Speranza Mendrisio . Soon the new club called itself just FC Mendrisio again . In 1959 it was renamed FC Mendrisiostar . The club kept this name until 1982, when it was simply called FC Mendrisio again . On June 2, 2006 there was a merger with the fourth division club FC Stabio , founded in 1958 , a club from the neighboring municipality of Stabio , to form FC Mendrisio-Stabio .

These days the club is playing in Group 3 (Northern and Eastern Switzerland / Ticino) of the three- tier, third-class, so-called " 1st league ."

Sporting highlights

In 1948, under the Italian coach Aventino Zamboni, the promotion to the second division, called National League B at the time, took place for the first time . The Ticino could only stay there for four years until 1952.

The ascent did not take place again until 1968. This time, the descent took seven years, until 1975, to come. During this time, which must be regarded as the heyday of the men from Mendrisio, they even made it into the semi-finals of the Swiss Cup in 1971 . There, however, the first division club FC Lugano under record coach Albert Sing with "Atom-Otto" Luttrop Mendrisiostar put a stop and defeated the cantons in their place after a goalless first half with 2-0. It was also in the era in which the later national player Claudio Sulser took the first steps of a great career at Mendrisiostar until 1973.

After relegation in 1975, Mendrisiostar immediately rose again, but could only hold up for a year. In the 1979/80 season the legendary, 41-year-old Brazilian-Italian world champion José Altafini played with the brave Ticino team, who made it back to the top with him. This time they survive the first year, but only because the league was expanded from 14 to 16 teams. 1985, almost forty years after the first promotion, the club, now called FC Mendrisio, said goodbye to the second division for the last time. The Ticino had a positive goal difference with 39:37 goals, but were one point worse than the competition from FC Laufen from the canton of Basel-Landschaft.

Successful experiences of FC Stabio

The sporting highlight of FC Stabio was the 1991/92 season, when the club rose to the third division. As the penultimate he had to say goodbye immediately. In the cup competition, the team from Stabio achieved a respectable success in the 2003/04 season in the first round in a district derby of the second division club FC Chiasso with a 3-2 win after extra time. On that day, Clementi, who shot out a 2-0 lead at halftime with a double strike in the 17th and 18th minutes, and Pelizzari, who secured victory with a penalty in the 105th minute, were among the heroes. In the next round, however, came out with a 0-2 home defeat against the first division club FC Thun .

Stadion

The club plays its home games in the Centro Sportivo Comunale , which has around 4000 standing places and 260 seats.
