Children's museum in Graz

The Frida & Fred (spelling: FRida & freD) is a children's museum in Graz's Augarten. It was built in 2003 under the direction of the architects Hemma Fasch and Jakob Fuchs. In principle, the museum with its interactive exhibitions is aimed at the age group of 3 to 12 year olds. The exhibitions are designed under the motto "Hands On - Minds On" so that the children can help shape and try them out themselves.

Frida & Fred is a member of Hands On Europe , the association of European children's museums.

In addition to the annually changing exhibitions, children's theater performances and workshops take place several times a week at Frida & Fred. Since 2010 a laboratory for the exhibition topics (water, optics, medicine, energy, food, aviation, genetics) has been a fixed part of the program. In addition, there are a number of workshops parallel to the exhibitions, such as B. Saturday at two, as well as various vacation and special programs and the annual summer academy in the 9 weeks of summer vacation.

Traveling exhibitions

The Graz Children's Museum adapts, expands or integrates exhibitions developed by other institutions.

Some of the exhibitions shown at Frida & Fred are designed so that they can also be loaned to other museums:

Building

The building was erected under great time pressure and opened just 10.5 months after the groundbreaking in January on November 22, including the exhibition (world tour, planned with BEHF Architects , Vienna) in Graz, 2003, the year of the cultural capital . The construction costs amounted to € 3.7 million. It has many bevels in steel, concrete and glass, the middle of the nested floor levels can be reached by wheelchair without steps, all by lift. Inclined HEA steel beams stiffened with solid wood form the side walls. The roof skin and side panels are made of gray PU film to approximate the color of tree bark in the Augarten . The inside of the upper floor is lined with perforated plywood panels. Ribbons of windows almost all around the building offer a view of all room levels from the outside, as these ribbons are usually far above or below eye level when viewed from the inside and the view leads into the large park, so visitors are not distracted from the exhibition. The high level of transparency of the entire structure is also supported by perforated, clear plastic film elements, which are stretched under the roof (with north skylights) as sound insulation. The stage-side, partially glazed wall of the theater hall is made up of floor-to-ceiling elements that have not yet been used to move. In order to be able to direct the lighting in the hall, the inside of the hall was draped in black textile. In 2006 the architects won the 1st Austrian Architecture Award with the building.

During the construction, the operating team developed a 15 m long passenger-carrying cable car indoors in the air space above the exhibition and delivered it by Leitner AG . A passenger drives himself with a hand crank drive. In the years that followed, the outside area extending into the park was designed and the upholstered wave cascade in the basement was secured against jumping from above by a glass wall. A low entrance height of around 2.30 m limits the bringing in of high exhibition objects. In 2010, higher buildings were built on the neighboring property to the north (formerly Augartenkino).

In March 2015, Vice Mayor Martina Schröck announced a planned expansion of the Children's Museum at a press conference on the new “Air and Climate” exhibition .
