Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us (English: 'Faith separates us, death unites us') is the twelfth studio album by the English band Paradise Lost . Stylistically, it continues the harder course of the previous album In Requiem , which is reminiscent of records like Icon and Draconian Times .

History of origin

During the songwriting process for Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us , Paradise Lost did without lengthy rehearsals, the songwriters Gregor Mackintosh (music) and Nick Holmes (music) emailed each other the song ideas: “If there is no answer, you know that they think it sucks. ”(Nick Holmes) Doom metal bands like Candlemass and Bathory were mentioned as influences. Jens Bogren ( Amon Amarth , Opeth ) was selected as the producer and the record was recorded with him in the spring of 2009 in Örebro , Sweden . Bogren had also mixed the live DVD The Anatomy of Melancholy . The band was very satisfied with both works. The drums were recorded in the studio by Peter Damin, only later Adrian Erlandsson ( At the Gates , Cradle of Filth, among others ) was introduced as a new band member. The special edition contains the “Lost in Prague Orchestra Mixes” as bonus songs on a second CD. They were played by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Miriam Němcová.

reception

The reviews for Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us are positive. Eduardo Rivadavia saw the record on allmusic .com as the successor to Draconian Times . The rating was three and a half stars. Also on Plattentests.de , where seven out of ten points were awarded, Markus Bellmann called the album the “legitimate successor” of the albums of this phase, but “by no means turned backwards”. Only at Living With Scars is the "joy of experimentation" somewhat exaggerated. In Rock Hard , Holger Stratmann called the songwriting “concentrated, sophisticated work” and praised the sound of the record as “world class”, the band played “to the point” and “great details and ideas” could be heard. Only the lack of a "catchy hit" was criticized. The rating was 8.5 out of ten points. Michael Edele wrote on Laut.de that the songs were unfolding slowly, but that the album was "a step ahead" of its predecessor In Requiem . Edele awarded the highest rating with five stars.
