history

Fajardo was founded between 1760 and 1774 under the name Santiago de Fajardo . The city was one of the places the Americans used to invade Puerto Rico. On August 1, 1898, the sailing ship USS Puritan, under the direction of Captain Frederic W. Rodgers, was sailing along the coast of Puerto Rico when he saw a lighthouse off the coast of Fajardo, which was intended as the landing site of the United States Army . Rodgers ordered part of his force to go ashore and hoist the American flag on the lighthouse.

flag

The city's flag consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width in red, white and blue. The red stripe symbolizes the color of the border of a protective shield, the white stripe stands for the middle part of the protective shield. The lower blue stripe symbolizes the sky and the sea on Fajardo's coast. The city coat of arms is placed in the center of the flag. This has the shape of a square with a rounded lower side and a crown consisting of three golden castle towers over the upper side. In the middle of the coat of arms there is a silver sailing ship on a blue background, which rides on three silver waves and is surrounded by two silver birds. The coat of arms is held by two golden dolphins on both sides. Below the coat of arms there is a curved silver band with the inscription "SANTIAGO DE FAJARDO".
