Falchion was a Finnish metal band from Lahti that was formed in 2002 and disbanded in 2009.

history

The formation of the band was mainly influenced by the albums Elegy by Amorphis and the self-titled album by Ensiferum . Falchion was founded in May 2002 by the 15- and 16-year-old boys Juho Kauppinen (electric guitar, vocals) and Joonas Simonen (keyboard). Since 2000 they had mainly covered songs by Stratovarius and Amorphis together . Also in spring a drummer was found in Ville Vehviläinen, before Seppo Tiaskorpi on bass in December and Sami Heinonen on second guitar in March 2003. In 2002 and 2003 Kauppinen and Simonen wrote the first songs before a first demo with four songs was recorded in June 2003 in the Lahden yhteiskoulu, the school they both went to. The recordings took place under the direction of Juha Kallas, who also mixed the material. During the studio stay Simonen, Heinonnen and Vehvilläinen, who was drafted into the military, left the band. Drummer Teemu Peltonen and guitarist Jani Laine joined as replacements. As a result, the songs were only written by Kauppinen. The recording of the demo was finished in November 2003. The demo was released that month under the name Glory of the Sword .

Through the demo, the group reached a record deal for an album with the Japanese label World Chaos Production in December 2003 . Nine songs had been written by the spring of 2004, after which the recordings began in June at Studio Watercastle in Jyväskylä with producer Arttu Sarvanne . He mixed the finished material within eight days at the beginning of July before it was mastered by Timo Lehtimäki in Studio 57 in Kronoby in October . In September Sami Heinonen returned to the band. In October Kauppinen joined Korpiklaani , which made Falchion initially inactive. Shortly before the impending dissolution of Falchion, the debut album Legacy of Heathens was released in October 2005 . The publication was followed by appearances. In autumn 2005 Kauppinen moved from Lahti to Tampere , as most of the Korpiklaani members lived there, and as a result Falchion never rehearsed in Lahti again.

In the summer of 2006, Kauppinen decided to completely change the line-up, as he had not been able to rehearse with them for a year due to the great distance to the other members. In August, Kauppinen had a chat with his friend Sampsa Savijärvi, whom he convinced to join the band as a guitarist. He in turn brought his friend Miikka Tulimäki into the band as the third guitarist. Another friend of Savijärvis named Janne Kielinen took over the bass. The drummer Matti Johansson, who came from Korpiklaani, completed the line-up. Savijärvi left the band a short time later. After rehearsals in the fall, the band made their first appearance in February 2007 in Turku with Eternal Tears of Sorrow . Since the band had no record deal in 2007, Kauppinen did not write any songs for Falchion, instead he wrote a total of eleven songs for the three Korpiklaani albums Tales Along This Road (2006), Tervaskanto (2007) and Korven kuningas (2008). He also held over 150 appearances with Korpiklaani from 2005 to 2007. After recording Korven kuningas in autumn 2007, he wrote new songs for Falchion.

In December 2007 the Adamantium Studios in Tampere were booked to record the new album there in March with producer Jukka Ruostila . After negotiations with another label, the group signed a record deal with the German label Massacre Records in January 2008 . The album consists of songs written in 2004 and between 2006 and 2008. The album was mastered by Mika Jussila in Helsinki at Finnvox Studios . The album was released in September 2008 under the name Chronicles of the Dead . In November and December they went on tour with Korpiklaani, Battlelore and Kivimetsän Druidi . In April 2009 the band took part in the Ragnarök Festival in Lichtenfels . Towards the end of the year the group announced its breakup.

style

Reini from stormbringer.at assigned the group to Pagan and Viking Metal in his review of Legacy of Heathens . The first song Immortal Heroes is reminiscent of Running Wild with its two-part guitar runs . Folk in the Golden Town shows slight Speed Metal influences. In some songs the group also process influences from Black Metal ( Journey in the Woods ) or Death Metal ( The Ancient Tale ). Marc Halupczok from Metal Hammer wrote in his Chronicles-of-the-Dead -Review that you can hear music similar to Korpiklaani, with Falchion "but more direct and" more metallic ". The album is characterized by long and repetitive instrumental passages and Kauppinen's limited vocals. In contrast to Korpiklaani or other bands like Ensiferum or Turisas , the group only succeeds to a limited extent in bringing in the folk elements . Rüdiger Stehle from Powermetal.de also reviewed the album and described it as a mixture of hard, direct pagan and melodic death metal , which is more extreme than the music of Korpiklaani, because it "[k] no keyboards, no folkadoodle, no humppa and no hopping around ”offer. Occasionally the melodies are "folky". The song Shadows in the Wasteland has similarities to Accept , while Kingdom of Dust sounds like Running Wild. Overall, the music can be compared with that of Ensiferum or Turisas.
