Fallout is an American science fiction film from 1999 with Daniel Baldwin .

In 2016 there is an international team on the international space station "Gateway" consisting of Americans and Soviet citizens . The computer expert Amanda McCord flies with a Russian pilot in the space shuttle to the space station. There she should get to the bottom of the technical problems of the on-board computer.

Upon inspection, Amanda McCord discovers that the system has apparently been tampered with. It is the space shuttle pilot, Previ Federov, who is behind the sabotage and who turns out to be a terrorist ; together with his compatriots he takes the rest of the crew prisoner and locks them in a chamber. It provides an ultimatum the United States, if not the Soviet troops from Previs home country within hours Tajikistan are withdrawn, then he wants in orbit located satellites to control the Earth's atmosphere and detonate near the surface. The subsequent fallout ( "Fallout") would erase much of the American population.

JJ Hendricks is the only pilot who can fly the experimental X-33 space shuttle, a prototype. However, since he cannot successfully steer the spacecraft through the uppermost layers of the earth's atmosphere in the simulator (it burns up due to too early "immersion") and looks to NASA to blame , he quits his job.

But when the military is called in to fight the terrorists, they want to hire Hendricks again so that he can immediately leave for the space station with the X-33 with a team of elite soldiers. Hendricks agrees after being offered to receive whatever command he wants as a pilot.

In the meantime, one of the captured crew members has succeeded in making an "emergency telephone" from the electrical installation material available, with which contact can be made to the ground station in Houston and help can be requested.

After the crew arrives at the space station, the soldiers are shot at immediately; none of them survived. Only Hendricks can get to safety and later get to the station from 130 km away from the space shuttle with a "rocket elevator" unnoticed.

He first frees the prisoners from the chamber. Finally, thanks to Hendricks' help, the crew succeeds in eliminating the terrorists and safely returning to earth with the X-33.

The film was first released on videotape on May 27, 1999. In Germany it has been available on DVD since March 1, 2000.

criticism

The TV magazine Cinema describes the film on its website as "botch".
