Pilgrimage Church of Maria Fallsbach

Pilgrimage Church of Maria Fallsbach

The current church from 1516 has a beautiful ribbed vault in the choir and nave and a richly profiled south portal made of fine sandstone. In front of the church there is a pilgrim's fountain with a wrought iron grille and roof (1700). The founding legend of the pilgrimage church tells of a hunter who, with an unbridled passion for hunting, also went hunting on a Sunday. In the Schacherholz next to the Wimmerkapelle he shot a stag that had the image of the Queen of Heaven in its antlers. The stag eventually perished near the falls stream. To atone for his iniquity, the hunter had a church built in honor of Mary and the deer antlers with the image of Mary attached to the church for eternal memory.
