Fear of Domination is a Finnish melodic death and industrial metal band from Nurmijärvi , which was founded in 2006.

history

The band was founded in the summer of 2006 by the singer Saku Solin, the guitarist Jan-Erik Kari and the drummer Jaakko Arteli. Lauri Ojanen was added as bass player, before Marko Salmikangas was added as second guitarist. However, the latter left the group in 2007. The name of the band comes from the bass player Ojanen and was originally intended as the title for a song. The band continued their activity after the departure of Salmikangas with only one guitarist and also played concerts. In the summer of 2007, Johannes Niemi joined as a further guitarist. Niemi had been friends with Solin and Ojanen since childhood. In the following time the demo Perfect World was recorded and further performances were held. Later there were disagreements between the members, which could be resolved, so that the way to another band expansion by the keyboardist Niina Telén in 2008 was free. In 2009 the debut album Call of Schizophrenia was released . The album was recorded in D-Studio in Klaukkala . Before the release, the band had also been signed by Petja Turunen from the band Turmion Kätilöt on his label Osasto A-Records . After the release, more appearances followed, for example at the after-show party of the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival or as a support act for Deathstars on their tour through Finland in early 2010. The band also recorded demos for the next album and worked on an EP which should contain the songs Coma and Modify , among others . The EP was never released, however, as the recording of the second album began in the summer of 2010. Shortly before that, Arteli had left the line-up due to musical differences. As a replacement came Vesa Ahlroth, who had already helped out with the band when Arteli was unable to attend. In 2011 the second album Create.Control.Exterminate followed. on. The song Pandemonium was released as a single . Matti Remes joined the band as promoter and manager, which enabled her to perform at larger events. With the addition of the sound engineer Papa Wilske, the performances also became more professional. In the spring of 2012 Telén left the band, whereupon Lasse Raelahti took over the keyboard. Raelahti had previously been with the group as a temporary worker and merchandise seller. This was followed by other appearances such as 2012 on the Myötätuulirock , to which Helena Haaparanta contributed vocals, and a small tour with Mass Murder Agenda through Finland and Sweden . During a performance in Kuopio , the band met Hanna Niskanen, who then supported the live performances as a lighting technician. In 2013 the group began pre-producing new songs for the next album in D-Studio. The single Paperdoll was released in the spring . The song was also played at the following concerts. In the summer, Fear of Domination went back to D-Studio to record the album. Helena Haaparanta trained and produced Solin's singing before the recordings were finished towards the end of the summer. In the fall, another single, Legion, was released, for which a music video was created for the first time . During this time a small tour of Finland was also carried out with the Russian band X-None. The booking agent Ismo Korhonen also signed the band. In February 2014 the album Distorted Delusions was released. At the same time, the band was on a major tour of Finland before appearing on the Nummirock that summer . In autumn they went on their first tour through Europe . In August 2015, a music video for the song El Toro , which is included on the later album, was released as a foretaste. Another single followed in May with Adrenaline , whereupon the album Atlas followed in the same month . At the beginning of 2017, Helena Haaparanta separated from the band in order to be able to concentrate on other projects. Sara Strömmer suggested this as a suitable replacement for female vocal passages in live shows. Since the band found the collaboration with Strömmer to be harmonious, she officially became the second singer alongside the singer Saku Solin. The band announced this news during the performance at the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival, although even Strömmer had not been informed of this beforehand. In the summer of 2017, the band wrote new songs and was also booked for SaariHelvetti on the Finnish island of Viikinsaari , which belongs to Tampere .

style

Timon Krause from Powermetal.de assigned the band in his review of Distorted Delusions to Industrial Metal in the style of Pitchshifter , Ministry and Nine Inch Nails . The group itself describes their style as "Shock-Industrial Metal". In the songs there was a "straighte [n], pounding [n] Industrial - Groove " and provide you with "electronic gadgets". Furthermore, there is "[d] ezente horror effects, varied Keyboard gadgets, high-class guitar solo , and hugely varied vocal performances," the "between fragile-high and clear vocals and nasty darkly deep guttural cries " would vary. In the song Violence Disciple , the band processed elements from Nu Metal . The speed of the songs is mostly in the upper range. The band also picked up set pieces from Gothic Rock several times , while the song Dead Space made use of modern Power Metal in the style of Stratovarius . Dave "That Metal Guy" Campbell from metal-temple.com also reviewed the album and classified it as Industrial Metal. The song Paperdoll is characterized by keyboard and uses Power Metal, with a deep vocals that sound like a mixture of Children of Bodom and Dimmu Borgir , in contrast. The song Parasite shows parallels to HIM . According to Philipp Issler from Metal.de , the song material on Atlas is darker than its predecessors, although the band, like before, combines melodic death metal with industrial effects. Particularly characteristic are "wild keyboards, driving drums and the impressively versatile singing style". However, the group does not manage to shock with their “Shock Metal”, instead they offer a mixture of modern synthesizer effects like Pain or Lindemann , melodic Death Metal like Amorphis and occasionally grooving Nu-Metal influences. PorcupineOfDoom from metalholic.com summed up the style of the album as a powerful mix of Melodic Death Metal and Industrial Metal, with a special focus on the synthesizers. Compared to its predecessors, the proportion of clear vocals has increased significantly.
