In addition, the Felix Schoeller Group develops special solutions, for example in the areas of RFID and printed electronics . The company is family owned.

history

1895 to 1945

Felix HM Schoeller with his wife Agnes

Felix Hermann Maria Schoeller (1855–1907), son of the papermaker Felix Heinrich Schoeller (1821–1893), relied early on in developing photography and recognized that a growing market would arise for (silver salt) photo paper. In 1895 he took over the Grunersche paper factory in Gretesch , a district of Osnabrück since 1972, and founded the Felix Schoeller jr paper factory to produce photo base paper. The first paper machine started up in Burg Gretesch just one year later . The first roles went to the Gevaert company in Belgium. In addition to photo base papers, Felix Schoeller continued to produce papers from the previous owner's range, including document papers, drawing and packaging papers.

With his wife Agnes, geb. Böhm (1861–1945) Felix Hermann Maria Schoeller had four children. After his death in 1907, his sons Felix Heribert, Lothar and Gerhard Schoeller took over management of the company. Schoeller's daughter Magdalene also inherited a share in the company, but did not join the management team. In 1912 the company founded the Felix Schoeller Paper Company in the USA. The subsidiary settled in New York. In 1932 first attempts were made to produce coated paper.

Expansion after 1945

The company continued to grow after the end of World War II . In 1949 the third Schoeller generation joined the company management with Klaus, Felix Richard and Gert Schoeller. In 1962 Schoeller had an export share of over 60 percent for the first time. In 1978 the company had sales of around 170 million marks.

When Hans-Michael Gallenkamp (* 1945), Gerhard Schoeller's grandson, took over the management of the company in 1980, he adjusted the range. From then on, with a few exceptions, photo base paper was only produced. In 1986 he had the world's most powerful paper machine for photo base paper, the PM 1, built in Osnabrück. In 1989 sales in the main factory exceeded 500 million marks.

1990 to 2000

After the reunification , Schoeller took over the " Freiberg Paper Factory zu Weißenborn GmbH", the then leading supplier of photo base papers in Eastern Europe. At the same time, the focus on the production of photo base papers was abandoned. The reason for this was the beginning of the technology change from analog to digital photography . He was seen as a major threat in the photography industry. Felix Schoeller began developing and producing papers for high-quality, photo-like digital prints, at that time mainly inkjet prints. On the other hand, the company diversified into another area of specialty paper production, decor papers for the wood-based materials industry.

In 1991 the company bought the "Papierfabrik zu Penig GmbH". In 1993, two Technocell AG plants, Pasing and Günzach, were taken over - the second largest investment since the company was founded. Technocell AG became Technocell Dekor, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Felix Schoeller Group, manufacturer of high-quality decor papers. These special papers are used for the decorative coating of wood-based materials and are impregnated with synthetic resins in printed or unprinted form and then laminated or laminated to the carrier material . In 1998 the paper mill in Titisee-Neustadt was taken over. In 1998 the expansion of the Weißenborn plant began. In Weißenborn, all production steps are located under one roof - from the production of the base paper to the finishing with a plastic ( PE ) coating and the application of color-receiving layers to packaging and storage.

Since 2000

The paper machine 1 in Osnabrück

In 2000 the Felix Schoeller Limited in Great Britain was closed; In 2004 the company refused to settle the pension claims of 392 former employees.

In 2001, Felix Schoeller and Kunz Holding founded Technocell Inc, a joint venture for the production of decorative papers for the North American market. The joint venture ended in 2003 with the takeover of all Kunz shares.

Technocell Dekor has also been represented on the Russian market since 2006 with the Mayak-Technocell plant in Penza operated as part of a joint venture . A new paper machine, PM 5, was built there in 2009 in order to be able to supply the growing Russian and Eastern European market.

In 2007, Bernhard Klofat took over the management of the company, and Hans-Michael Gallenkamp became chairman of the company's advisory board. With Bernhard Klofat, a third-party manager has chaired the management for the first time.

In 2007, Felix Schoeller lost his major customer Fuji Corporation , which had been a buyer of Schoeller products for 25 years. As a result, in October 2007 the company announced the reduction of around 270 jobs at the Osnabrück location and 25 at other locations in Germany and overseas.

Felix Schoeller Supply Chain Technologies was founded in 2007 as a 100 percent subsidiary of the Felix Schoeller Group. The company develops and implements RFID -based solutions for supply chain monitoring . The Felix Schoeller Group has been implementing systems for supply chain monitoring since the mid-1990s.

With effect from March 1, 2014, the RFID activities of Felix Schoeller Supply Chain Technologies (FST) were sold to Wilms oHG , Bad Essen . The background is the concentration on the core business.

Determination of the Cartel Office

In 2007 the Federal Cartel Office investigated Felix Schoeller Holding and Technocell Dekor in Osnabrück, as well as other companies in the industry, on suspicion of "agreements restricting competition at the expense of customers" and on November 6, 2007 searched the premises of both companies.

In January 2008 the Federal Cartel Office imposed fines totaling 62 million euros on Schoeller and two other manufacturers of decorative paper for price and capacity shutdown agreements .

In 2008 the Felix Schoeller Group's sales amounted to around 340,000 tons of paper. Sales in the same year were 655 million euros. In 2010, Felix Schoeller is investing in the rebuild of paper machine 1. As the world's first "combination machine", PM 1 will be able to produce other imaging and decor papers in addition to the photo base papers produced so far.

In the 1980s, with the advent of the first digital cameras, alternatives to traditional photo reproduction emerged. This led to a change in strategy for the Felix Schoeller Group. On the one hand, Felix Schoeller developed paper for printing digital photos. On the other hand, in addition to the production of inkjet and thermal transfer papers, the company started manufacturing decorative papers. The two business areas Imaging and Decor each contribute around half of the group's sales.

In the field of imaging, the company offers matt and glossy coated papers for photo print on a home computer for example, PE photo paper for professional photographic prints, test papers for prepress, solvent and UV Curable papers for the design of advertising space in the indoor or outdoor models, Photo papers for photo books . Felix Schoeller works exclusively in the B2B sector, and customers include international printer manufacturers.

The decor papers from Technocell Dekor serve as the basis for the surface refinement of wood-based materials such as chipboard or MDF boards . Surfaces made of decorative paper can be found on kitchen worktops, furniture, doors, wall coverings and laminate floors , for example . The range includes LPL, HPL and CPL papers in solid or print-based quality, edge papers, foil papers, pre-impregnated papers (PRIP®), regenerated papers and inkjet-compatible decor papers. The most recent new developments also include Resin Saving Paper (RSP®), which enables resin savings of up to 25% in further processing.

In addition, Felix Schoeller produces technical special papers and foils and develops special solutions in the area of new technologies, from IT-supported solutions based on RFID technology to papers for printing electronic elements (p_e: smart).
