The Rock tulip ( Tulipa saxatilis called), sometimes Cretan tulip or Kandia Tulip is a plant from the genus of tulips ( Tulipa ) in the family of the lily family (Liliaceae).

features

The rock tulip is a perennial herbaceous plant . The stems reach heights of growth of up to 25 centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. The egg-shaped onions have a tough shell, are 2 to 3.5 centimeters long and 1.5 to 3 centimeters thick. The two to three leaves are up to 38 centimeters long and 4.5 centimeters wide, flat, narrowly lanceolate and clearly shiny on the top.

The flowers are mostly single, more rarely in pairs on the stem. The bracts are light pink in color, have a sharply demarcated yellow spot at the base and are pointed. The three outer bracts are 38 to 53 millimeters long and 9 to 18 millimeters wide, the three inner ones are the same length but wider. The stamens are hairy at the base. The anthers are brown to blackish and have a length of 4.5 to 7 millimeters. The capsule has large cross veins in the upper part.

The flowering period extends from March to May. There are diploid and triploid plants with 2n = 24 and 36 chromosomes .

Occurrence

The rock tulip is a plant of the South Aegean island arc . It occurs scattered in the limestone regions of Crete (including the islands of Gavdos and Dia ), also on Karpathos (on the Kali Limni mountain) and occasionally on Rhodes and the Datça peninsula in southwest Turkey . The species is naturalized in Great Britain on the Isles of Scilly . It populates field borders , rubble slopes and rock faces at altitudes of up to 900 meters.

use

The often cultivated variety 'Lilac Wonder', which is often assigned to the closely related Tulipa bakeri , was selected from the rock tulip.
