Fenestraria is the only plant of monotypic genus Fenestraria from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Latin word fenestra for "window" and refers to the so-called windows, which are located on the rounded tips of the leaves. The epithet of the species is derived from the Greek words rhopalon (ρόπαλον) for "club" and for phyllon (φύλλον) for "leaf" and refers to the club-shaped leaves.

description

Fenestraria rhopalophylla grows compact or sunk into the ground to form lawns . Of the dark green, club-shaped leaves , usually only the window at the top is visible. The leaves have a smooth, waxy surface.

The individual (rarely two or three) flowers are carried by a long flower stalk . There are bracts . The petals are white or yellow in color. Fenestraria rhopalophylla blooms in their homeland from July to September.

The capsule fruits with 8 to 16 pods are similar to those of the genus Leipoldtia , but have small closure bodies. The smooth whitish to light brown seeds are somewhat conical.

Systematics, number of chromosomes and distribution

The distribution area of Fenestraria rhopalophylla extends from Lüderitz in Namibia in a narrow strip south through the Namaqualand and the Northern Cape Province in South Africa. It grows in Aeolian coastal sand or gravel, rarely also in recesses over the Dolomites . The annual rainfall is less than 100 millimeters, with the majority falling in winter.

The chromosome number is .

The first description of the genus and species was published in 1925 by Nicholas Edward Brown . Two subspecies are distinguished based on the size and color of the flowers:

  • Fenestraria rhopalophylla subsp. rhopalophylla
  • Fenestraria rhopalophylla subsp. aurantiaca

Fenestraria rhopalophylla subsp. aurantiaca has large, golden yellow flowers up to 70 millimeters in diameter. Fenestraria rhopalophylla subsp. rhopalophylla flowers white with small flowers that only reach a diameter of 18 to 30 millimeters.
