Life
Ferdinand Bellermann was a scion of the Erfurt merchant family Bellermann and related to the porcelain manufacturer Christian Nonne . Born on March 14, 1814 in Erfurt, Bellermann attended the Princely Free Drawing School in Weimar in 1828 to train as a porcelain painter, but had to drop out of it due to weak eyes. In 1833 he moved to the Berlin Academy , where Karl Blechen and Wilhelm Schirmer trained him. Travels led in 1839 with Friedrich Preller the Elder. Ä. and his student Sixt Thon (1817–1901) to Rügen and the next year with Carl Hummel as a further companion via Belgium and Holland to Norway . A travel grant, granted by Friedrich Wilhelm IV with the support of Alexander von Humboldt , enabled him to stay in Venezuela from 1842 to 1845 .
In 1851 and 1852 he took part in the painting of the New Museum in Berlin, where he executed two wall paintings for the Hall of Nordic Antiquities.
From 1853 to 1854 and 1877 he made trips to Italy .
In 1857 he was appointed professor at the Berlin Academy at the suggestion of his teacher Wilhelm Schirmer . Bellermann also succeeded Schirmer in 1866 as head of the landscape painting class at the academy.
Ferdinand Konrad Bellermann died largely forgotten on August 11, 1889 in Berlin. He was buried in the second cemetery of the Trinity Congregation at Bergmannstrasse 39 in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The tomb has not been preserved.
