Ferdinand Krackowizer (born May 27, 1844 in Wels , † October 20, 1933 in Linz ) was an Austrian archivist and writer, as well as the first Upper Austrian regional archive director.

Life

He was born in Wels as the son of a magistrate secretary and later a regional judge. From 1850 to 1854 he attended the district high school in Steyr , because at that time his father had come to the newly established regional court (later district court) as an assessor. Then until 1862 he was at the Stiftsgymnasium in Kremsmünster , Upper Austria . From 1862 to 1865 he studied law at the University of Vienna and the following year in Innsbruck . On March 26, 1868, he obtained his doctorate there. Two years earlier, in 1866, he joined the law firm of the well-known lawyer August Prinzinger in Salzburg and, at the beginning of 1868, joined the financial procurator there as a concept intern. After a few months he moved to Linz in the same capacity, where he was accepted by the Province of Upper Austria on June 18 of the same year. However, since he did not like the work in the concept service, he changed to a state archivist and registrar in 1875.

In 1870 he married Emma Würtenberger, a factory owner's daughter from Salzburg and the great niece of the Tyrolean freedom hero Josef Speckbacher . The marriage resulted in a daughter who was married to Chief Magistrate Innocenz Tallavania .

Ferdinand Krackowizer wrote a series of regional studies such as a short history of the Linz theater and, at the request of the Upper Austrian Teachers' Association, published a “Local History of Upper Austria” (1872), which, according to the teaching regulations issued in connection with the Reich Primary School Act, serve as a “handbook for school use” should. What is remarkable about this book is the use of the name "Heimatkunde", which emerged at the time, instead of the previously usual term "Landeskunde".

In addition to his job and cultivating the history of his home country, Krackowizer wrote a series of writings about his memories of Kremsmünster and the university, in which his cheerful nature is clearly expressed; it and other publications have given him a reputation as a humorist, especially since his previously widely read “Natural History of Austrian Students” was published by the well-known Reclam publishing house in Leipzig (1890). His handwritten memorial book “From my life and from my time” (1912/13) also only covers the years of youth up to 1870.

In 1893 the state archive organization began in Austria on a scientific basis. The Upper Austrian regional committee decided to have the archives of the cities, markets and municipalities of the country listed. This difficult task was taken over by Krackowizer, who in the summer of 1895 visited the communities that had reported possession of archive material. The Upper Austrian Provincial Archives opened on September 1, 1896, and Ferdinand Krackowizer became its director.

On August 1, 1903, he retired and in 1921, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the state archive, was given the title of state archive director. When he retired, he published a brochure, Das Oberösterreichische Landesarchiv zu Linz , at his own expense . While Krackowizer was also known as a humorist during his lifetime, in the memory of posterity he will mainly live on as a collector. His greatest work is his "Biographical Lexicon of the State of Austria ob der Enns" (scholars, writers and artists of Upper Austria since 1800), published in 1931. He was an honorary citizen of his home parish.

Ferdinand Krackowizer was the great-great-uncle of the motorcycle professor Helmut Krackowizer .
