Philipp Friedrich Ferdinand von Arnim (born October 6, 1772 in Brandenstein , † September 8, 1835 in Stolp ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 13th Cavalry Brigade .

Life

origin

His parents were Johann August von Arnim (1723–1797) from the von Arnim family and his second wife Wilhelmine Luise, born von Schierstedt (April 3, 1738 - September 3, 1776). His father was Lord of Brandenstein and District Administrator in Genthin .

Military career

On April 10, 1787 Arnim came as a Junker in the hussar regiment "von der Schulenburg" and advanced to June 4, 1792 to secondary lieutenant . During the First Coalition War he fought in the siege of Landau and the battles near Weißenburg, Alzey, Kirrweiler, Edesheim Edinghofen, Grünstadt and Neustadt. For this, Arnim received the order Pour le Mérite on June 8, 1794 at the suggestion of his commanding officer Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher . On September 6, 1800 he was promoted to prime lieutenant and on January 17, 1805 to staff captain. In the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the battle of Auerstedt and the battle near Fürstenberg before he was captured by the surrender at Ratkau.

After the war, Arnim came to the "Blücher" hussar regiment on June 10, 1807 and was assigned to the regiment on September 7, 1808. On February 7, 1812 he was promoted to Rittmeister and squadron chief and on February 10, 1813 major. During the Wars of Liberation, Arnim fought at the siege of Stettin. In the battle of Dennewitz he acquired the Iron Cross 2nd class and in Leipzig the Cross 1st class. He also fought in the battles near Thießen, Baruth, Hoogstaeten and Lier. For Conde he was awarded the Russian Saint Anne II Class. On October 6, 1814, he was appointed commander of the Elb Landwehr Regiment, and on March 29, 1815, he was appointed commander of the Pomeranian Hussar Regiment. During the mobilization he fell from his horse and unfortunately broke his leg. This injury did not prevent him from participating in the further campaign, but caused him problems for the rest of his life.

On October 12, 1815, Arnim was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on March 30, 1819, with a patent from April 25, 1819, to colonel . On August 30, 1825 he received the service cross and on September 10, 1826 the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class. On March 30, 1830, Arnim was appointed commander of the 13th Cavalry Brigade. On May 6, 1830 he received his retirement as major general with a pension . On March 10, 1832, he was given permission to wear his general uniform. He died on September 8, 1835 in Stolp in Pomerania.

Arnim adopted the two children of the field preacher and superintendent Christian Wilhelm Messerschmidt and Anna Katharina Eleonore von Mitzlaff :
