Wilhelm Ferdinand Friedrich Gustav Messerschmidt , from 1820 Messerschmidt von Arnim , (born April 29, 1797 in Belgard , † June 26, 1860 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general .

He was the son of the field preacher and superintendent Christian Wilhelm Messerschmidt (1754-1804) and his wife Anna Katharina Eleonore, née von Mitzlaff . Together with his brother Friedrich August Messerschmidt, he was adopted by Ferdinand von Arnim . The two were raised to the hereditary Prussian nobility on May 10, 1820 under the name Messerschmidt called von Arnim .

Military career

Messerschmidt joined the Pomeranian Hussar Regiment of the Prussian Army as a hussar on May 3, 1813 . For his participation in the Wars of Liberation , he received the Iron Cross, 2nd class, and was promoted to Second Lieutenant by January 1817 . As such, Messerschmidt was transferred to the 1st Guards Uhlan Regiment in mid-April 1819 and rose to prime lieutenant by mid-December 1828 . With his promotion to Rittmeister on March 30, 1839, he was transferred to the regiment of the Gardes du Corps . After serving as squadron chief Messerschmidt moved up as a major on April 27, 1848 in the regimental staff. From November 7, 1850 to February 10, 1851, he was briefly charged with the command of the 1st Guards Landwehr Cavalry Regiment. On March 11, 1852 he was appointed commander of the 7th Cuirassier Regiment and in this position Messerschmidt was on March 23, 1852 Lieutenant Colonel and on July 13, 1854 Colonel promoted. This was followed from July 20, 1854 to October 21, 1856 as commander of the Guard Cuirassier Regiment in Berlin. Then Messerschmidt was given command of the 6th Cavalry Brigade in Brandenburg an der Havel . In this position he was awarded the Red Eagle Order II. Class with Oak Leaves on January 1, 1858 and Messerschmidt was promoted to Major General on May 22, 1858. On 20 June 1859 he received his farewell to the statutory pension .

Messerschmidt married Karoline Sophie Kundenreich (1798–1872) on October 25, 1822 in Königsberg . They were both buried in the Invalidenfriedhof after their death . The marriage had four children:
