Ferdinand Friedrich Magnus August Freiherr von der Goltz (born December 20, 1795 in Königsberg , † June 7, 1867 in Wesel ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and most recently the commander of the 10th division.

Life

origin

Ferdinand was a son of the Prussian major Ferdinand Friedrich von der Goltz (1773-1813) and his wife Eleonore Charlotte Elisabeth, née von Szenska (1772-1856). His father was a knight of the order Pour le Mérite . He was seriously wounded in the battle of the Katzbach and died of the consequences in Jauer. His sister Blanka Katharina Franziska Eleonore (1799–1883) was married to his uncle, Major General Alexander Wilhelm von der Goltz .

Military career

Goltz received his training at the old town school in Königsberg and at the cadet house in Berlin. On January 28, 1814, he was transferred as a second lieutenant to the Leib-Garde-Grenadier-Battalion of the Prussian Army . At the end of September 1813, he was transferred to the 1st Guards Regiment on foot . During the wars of liberation Goltz was wounded in the battle of Großgörschen . He fought at the Katzbach (his father was badly wounded here). In Leipzig Goltz was again wounded, and with the Iron Cross awarded II. Class. In 1814 he was wounded again in the Battle of Paris . He also fought in the battles near Hochkirch, Görlitz and Schkeuditz, where he won the order of St. Anna III. Class acquired. He also took part in the transition at Wartenburg .

After the war, he joined the 17th Infantry Regiment on December 24, 1817, as a prime lieutenant . There he became a captain and company commander on July 15, 1828. On March 30, 1837, he was promoted to major and transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the 13th Landwehr Regiment as a commander. On April 7, 1842 he came to the 17th Infantry Regiment, where he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on March 27, 1847. On June 6, 1848, he was transferred to the 34th Infantry Regiment as commander and in this capacity was promoted to colonel on November 19, 1849 . On April 15, 1852, he became the commander of the 14th Infantry Brigade , but on May 4, 1852, he was transferred as a commander to the 28th Infantry Brigade and on June 14, 1852, he was assigned à la suite of the 34th Infantry Regiment. On March 22, 1853 he was promoted to major general before he was transferred to the fortress of Stettin as a commandant on June 7, 1856 . On August 6, 1857 he was then commander of the 10th Division and on October 15, 1857 promoted to major general.
