Ferenc Ilyés started playing handball in his Transylvanian hometown. There he was discovered by talent scouts from the top Hungarian club Pick Szeged and brought to Hungary. In 2000 he made his debut for the first time in the first team of Szeged, but could not initially prevail. He was then loaned to Makó KC for half a year during the winter break of the 2001/02 season. After his return, Ilyés made the breakthrough and developed into the top performer of his team in the following years. At the end of 2003 he accepted Hungarian citizenship and made his debut in the Hungarian national team. During his time in Szeged he won the Hungarian Cup in 2006 and the Hungarian Championship in 2007. In 2007 he decided - like many players from Szeged before - to switch to rival and record champions MKB Veszprém. In 2008 he won the European Cup Winners' Cup and the Hungarian Championship with Veszprém . Since the 2009/2010 season Ilyés has been playing in the handball Bundesliga for TBV Lemgo . There he won the EHF Cup in 2010 . In summer 2011 he returned to Veszprém. A year later, Ilyés moved to the Polish first division club Wisła Płock . From the 2013/14 season, he ran again for Pick Szeged with which he 2014 the EHF European Cup won. In the summer of 2016, he joined Tatabánya KC .

Ferenc Ilyés has so far played 219 international matches for the Hungarian men's handball team . With Hungary he was ninth at the 2004 European Handball Championship and fourth at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. With Hungary he also took part in the men's handball world championship in Germany in 2007 , but only finished 9th. In the summer of 2012 he again took part in the Olympic Games in London and finished fourth.
