Ferenc Varga (painter)

Ferenc "Feri" Varga (born March 22, 1906 in Terézföld , Hungary (today Terezino Polje , Croatia ), † October 20, 1989 in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ) was a Hungarian - French painter , graphic artist and sculptor .

Life

Varga's mother, Cecilia, came from a Viennese middle class family. At the age of 16 she married the Hungarian magnate Jószef Varga and gave birth to Ferenc as the eighth of ten children. As a result of the First World War , the family lost their property and moved to Budapest .

Varga grew up in a family that produced important artistic personalities in various fields. His great uncle Jószef Kiss was a respected ballad poet. His older brother Hugo Varga was a writer and the husband of the sculptor Ida Móricz , the sister of Zsigmond Móricz .

Varga lived in Budapest from 1914 and came to Paris as a sculptor in 1924 , where he turned to painting. From 1924 to 1927 he studied in Paris, first at the École des Beaux-Arts and then at the École des Arts et Métiers , where he graduated in 1927. In 1933 he worked artistically for a year on the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca . In 1940 he fled Paris from the National Socialists to southern France and settled in Cagnes-sur-Mer . From around 1950 he belonged to the circle of friends of Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso .

In 1961 he married for the third time. His wife Leonore geb. He followed Bäßler to Germany and settled in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. He lived there with his wife and three children Isabella, Patrick and Paloma until his death. The youngest daughter, Paloma Varga Weisz , became a successful draftsman and sculptor.

Works by Feri Varga can be found in numerous collections and museums in Germany, Austria, Hungary, France, Sweden and the USA.
