Fernando Barboza , full name Fernando Ariel Barboza Rilo , (born May 13, 1964 in Montevideo , † September 1, 2014 ) was a Uruguayan football player and coach.

Player career

The 1.82-meter-tall offensive player Barboza was the father of football player Diego Barboza . He started his career in the youth team (Formativas) of Nacional Montevideo . There he was also included in the first division squad in 1983 and 1984. 1985 followed a station at the first division club Central Español . In 1986 he played for the Rampla Juniors in the Primera División . This was followed in the 1986/87 season by an engagement in Spain at Celta Vigo , which, like his previous ones, was designed as a loan deal. The Spanish club, which brought him in to replace the meniscus injured Pichi Lucas , is said to have paid three million pesetas to Nacional Montevideo for the services of the Uruguayan. For the Galicians he ran from his debut on April 18, 1987 against Castellón to his last appearance on June 21, 1987 against Sestao eight times in the Segunda División , scored four goals and thus contributed to promotion to the Primera División . For Barboza, the move to the Iberian Peninsula also meant a significant leap in income. According to Barboza himself, the bonus paid out in Vigo for an away win was just as much as he had earned in one month at Nacional. Although there was a continuation of the successful relationship between player and club on the part of the player as well as on the part of the club, further cooperation failed because of the transfer fee of 25 million pesetas allegedly requested by Nacional. In the 1987/88 season he was 15 times (one goal) as a player for Celta Vigos league rivals FC Elche on the field. For the first time he ran for Elche on November 22, 1987 against Sestao, the last time on May 22, 1988 against FC Cartagena . In 1988 he returned to Nacional Montevideo. In the 1988/89 season, between September 4, 1988 ( Real Valladolid ) and March 26, 1989 ( Sevilla FC ), another 18 top division games (one goal) for Elche followed. In 1990 he worked for the Montevideo Wanderers in Uruguay and in 1991 for Bella Vista . Then his career path led to Ecuador . Deportivo Quito (1991), LDU Quito (1992) and again Deportivo Quito (1993) were his employers there. In the 1993/94 season he played eight league games (no goal) for the Portuguese club Estoril Praia . He then completed seven games (one goal) in the Segunda División B for FC Girona from November 20, 1994 to January 8, 1995 . He was also active in the 1994/95 season in Spain with CD Don Benito . He then made his debut on September 3, 1995 in the game against Hospitalet for his next employer Gimnàstic de Tarragona . Up to his last season appearance on December 17, 1995 against Valencia B, he played 13 league games and scored one goal. In the same season he moved to Novelda CF . For this club he ran for the first time on March 17, 1996 in the league. The opponent was Utrera. Overall, he came in the remainder of the 1995/96 season there seven times in the league and scored three times in the opposing goal. Also in the 1997/98 season he ran up to his last lineup on January 14, 1998 against Gandia 17 times in the Segunda División B for Novelda and scored two goals. He was also used four times (one goal) in the Copa del Rey . Four second division engagements in Uruguay at Salus (1998), Villa Española (1999), Club Atlético Progreso (1999) and Club Atlético Basáñez (2000) was followed by a position at Rocha FC , where he was part of the squad in 2001 in the Torneo Clasificatorio of the Primera División . In 2002 he played at least nine second division games (five goals) for Colón FC . In 2003 he was used in the Apertura started in May eight times (one goal) at Club Atlético Basáñez in the Segunda División . Other sources show him two goals in this half-series without naming a number of games played. He was there in the Clausura in the squad and scored seven goals. The last club of his career was El Tanque Sisley in 2004.

Coaching

After starting a coaching position at Platense in January 2012 , he took over the coaching position at Uruguay Montevideo in the 2012/13 season from August 2012 . As an assistant trainer, Barboza trained the Rampla Juniors with Héctor Codevilla from the 2014 Clausura at the latest .

Others

Barboza also held the office of general secretary in the Uruguayan players' union Mutual de Futbolistas Profesionales (MUFP) from 2003 to 2009 and also worked from March 2006 to April 2011 at FIFPro as general secretary of the America department. He died after a long illness at the age of 50.
