Life

Nottebohm grew up in Buenos Aires , Argentina . He earned a bachelor's degree in zoology in 1962 and a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley in Berkeley , California . He has been a faculty member since 1967, became an associate professor in 1971 and has been a full professor at Rockefeller University in New York City , New York, since 1976 . Paths of bird song acquisition

Nottebohm's work includes field studies of birdsong as well as molecular and cell biological studies of brain function. Nottebohm and co-workers discovered that in some songbirds the control of vocal function is concentrated on one side of the central and peripheral nervous system and that seasonal changes in certain nuclei underlie the ability to learn certain "stanzas". Nottebohm was able to elucidate some of the complex hormonal and learning-physiological mechanisms that have similarities with human language acquisition .

Nottebohm was able to show that in adult vertebrates ( Kanarengirlitz ) a replacement of neurons takes place in the adult brain during the acquisition of the song , which mechanisms and regulations underlie the replacement and that neuronal stem cells are involved. Possible future applications of these research results are in the treatment of brain injuries and neurodegenerative diseases in humans.

Nottebohm's studies partly use transgenic songbirds.
