history

The Iller crossing near Ferthofen has always played a central role. This important transition was already used in prehistory and early history. Later the imperial free highway led from Memmingen via Leutkirch - Wangen to Lindau over the Illerbrücke. The fate of the community has been determined by the events on the Iller crossing since Roman times. Merchants with salt, Lake Constance wine and grain, knights, soldiers and monks used the ford and bridge. The first documentary mention of the property of the Marstetten rulership can be dated to the years 1551 and 1559. In 1784 the Memmingen patrician Johann Sigmund von Lupine bought 40 days' work in Grund from the Marstetten lordship, freed them from foreign sovereignty and built his Illerfeld Castle on this noble estate . The Bavarian customs house was built in Ferthofen in 1806 , but the place did not become an independent municipality until 1818. From 1861, jurisdiction lay with the Memmingen Regional Court. Shortly before the end of the Second World War , the Iller Bridge was blown up to stop the advancing American and French troops. The bridge was not rebuilt until 1949 and enabled the connection between Bavaria and Württemberg again. In 1950 the Illerkraftwerk Aitrach near Ferthofen was put into operation.

On November 22, 1970, the majority of Ferthofer voted in a vote for the affiliation to the municipality of Volkratshofen, which was carried out on April 1, 1971. Since May 1st 1978 the village belongs to Memmingen.

Attractions

The reservoir of the Illerkraftwerk offers a special scenic charm. Illerfeld Castle , with its parks and a protected tulip tree avenue, is also a place of interest.
