Vegetative characteristics

The colorful fescue is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 70 centimeters. It forms dense clumps . The colorful fescue has strong and far-reaching roots. All renewal shoots are formed intravaginally. The stalks are mostly erect, and mostly enclosed by two leaf blades. As the ears ripen, the upper part of the stalk curves under the weight of the fruit.

The alternate leaves are cylindrical and have seven to nine leaf veins. The outside of the leaf blades has a continuous palisade clerenchyma . The ligule is 0.5 to 1 millimeter long.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from June to August. The panicle inflorescence hangs mostly and has rough inflorescence axes. The spikelets are pale or colored, more rarely yellowish, and sit on very short peduncles. The upper chaff scales have three nerves practically up to the middle and a rough web.

It also occurs in southern Italy and in Calabria ( Monte Pollino ). Festuca bosniaca belongs to it, as for example also Pinus heldreichii , Gentiana dinarica , Edrainathus graminifolius , Sesleria juncifolia s. l., Leontodon crispus s. st. and Carex kitaibeliana , to the amphi-Adriatic spreading Balkan sub-endemics who penetrate as far as the Apennine peninsula .
