The felty butterbur ( Petasites spurius ) is a species of the sunflower family (Asteraceae).
description
The perennial plant , with its rhizomes , reaches heights of between 10 and 30 centimeters. The leaf blades are triangular, heart-shaped in outline, wider than long, with a coarsely to curved-sawn leaf margin, a large free leaf bay and pointed basal-lateral parts. On the underside, they are densely haired with snow-white felting (name).
The inflorescence is from numerous, closely traubig arranged flower heads assembled. The flowers are pale yellow. The flowering period extends from March to April before the leaves form.
The number of chromosomes is n = 30.
Occurrence
The felty butterbur is found on beaches, on dunes and on river banks. It can be found on the Baltic coast from Schleswig-Holstein to East Prussia , as well as on the Danish islands with the exception of Funen . It can be found scattered in river valleys as far as Magdeburg , Berlin and Küstrin . It is a character species of the Saponario-Petasitetum spurii from the association Convolvulo-Agropyrion.
Systematics
The specific epithet spurius means "illegitimate, conceived by an unknown father with a prostitute" and refers to species whose taxonomic classification caused difficulties.
This species was first described by Retzius in 1779 as Tussilago spuria and thus placed as a sister species next to the coltsfoot . De Candolle then assigned the plant to the butterbur as Petasites tomentosus in 1805 , before Reichenbach gave it the botanical name Petasites spurius , which is valid today , in 1831 .
