background

The formation of the region around today's Potsdam-Mittelmark district originated around 20,000 years ago during a cold-age advance of the inland ice and the associated meltwater . At that time, the entire area was completely covered with ice during the most recent, the Vistula Ice Age - for example, the Zauche plateau was formed . After it had melted, a ground moraine surface with till clay emerged . A large number of erratic boulders accumulated during the agricultural use of the region through asparagus cultivation .

Concept of the garden

The boulder garden shows characteristic shrub and tree species in a regional arrangement, both from the late ice age, the warm period and the post-warm period. The entire area is enclosed by a blackberry hedge. In the northwest, next to a small information booth with a permanent exhibition, is the entrance to the site. Here, the vegetation zone of the post-ice age was reproduced, which was supplemented by an exhibition of treated natural stones and a tapping area for processing the boulders. In the middle area, the visitor arrives over a wooden walkway to a simulated dead lake and a terminal moraine . Plants that belong to the warm period predominate here. Behind the terminal moraine there is a drumlin , a Wallberg (Os) and a ground moraine lake. In this area of the warm period there are examples of sediment deposits as well as granite and gneiss .

In 2006 the exhibition was supplemented by sculptures by contemporary artists.
