The Finsterroter See is a reservoir that serves as a swimming and fishing lake . It is located in the district of the eponymous village Finsterrot , which belongs to the municipality of Wüstenrot in the Heilbronn district in Baden-Württemberg and is located in the Mainhardt Forest ; the district boundary to the municipality of Mainhardt in the Schwäbisch Hall district runs on the east bank .

location

The lake is located less than 200 m from the outskirts on the eastern edge of the district in the upper valley of the Dachsbach which feeds it . This 4.3 km long brook flows a good kilometer further south into the river Rot, which flows here west-east .

The lake is located completely in the conservation area Burgfrieden - Upper Dachsbachtal and in a most of the about 3.5 square kilometer catchment comprising water reserve. Immediately in front of the influence of the Dachsbach in the approx. 2.0  hectare large lake is an approximately 1.5 hectare large area of reeds, which has been protected as a large natural monument since 1986 .

On the west adjacent to the lake hilltop church youth vineyard operates an occupied especially during the summer youth center .

In the Dachsbachtal and its tributaries there are several other lakes, of which both Lauxseen above the Finsterroter See each have an area of around one hectare and a lake further down the valley on the southern edge of the B 39 is about 2.1 hectares in size.

history

The lake was created by the glassworks operator Ulrich Greiner , who was Finsterrot local lord from 1523 to 1559, as the mill lake of the village's mill located downstream . The reservoir belonged to the miller , it was called Neuer See for a long time to distinguish it from an already existing lake .

Finsterrots' last miller, Wilhelm Lang, gave up the mill in 1956 and set up the lake as a bathing lake, renting boats there from 1958 and selling ice cream and drinks from 1959. The lake was very well visited until the 1980s and, for example, also provided the NSU Motorenwerke from nearby Neckarsulm with the backdrop for the presentation of the NSU Prinz . With the increasing construction of outdoor pools and the opening of the nearby lake Breitenau in the 1980s, the number of visitors declined.

After Wilhelm Lang's death in 1984 and Elisabeth Lang's death in 1998, their two daughters inherited the lake, who are the owners to this day (as of 2017). From autumn 2007 to autumn 2008 the lake was drained to rehabilitate the no longer stable dam and to remove sludge, and since 2009 it has been possible to swim and fish in it again.
