The raft hook ( raft hook ) is a tool used in wood rafting (wood drift) . It was the raftsman's universal tool. It is known in shipping as a boat hook .

Form and use

Gancheros floating in a torrent, Spain, 1929

It is a piece of iron placed on a pole . This usually has a point and a barb.

The raftsman's hook was used to manipulate the floating logs, to build rafts, to steer the raft, to hold on to weir passages, to drive blocks, as well as to push, turn, turn, roll and lift the blocks . It was also used to keep balance when walking on the rafts.

The point is used to push away, the barb - similar to the sapie of the forest workers - to bring it closer; For turning on land, the turning hook is used , with the hook pointing in the other direction. In the river strip it was heavy and stable, 1½ to 4 meters long, the raft trees for rafting on the Main were even 3½ to 8 m long. In the Klaustrift, too, the tool bar was several meters long: weirs ( Klausen ) were built in smaller backwaters and the wood was collected in their backwaters. Then the weir was opened and the torrent carried the logs downstream. To the resulting Verklausungen (located verspreizende strains) to solve and must not be too deep descend into a gorge, we extended the rod. Working with the rafts hook was considered extremely dangerous.

Raft hooks are already documented from Roman times. In Bavaria it was known as Kronacher Haken , in other regions of Germany as Hinterhermsdorfer Flusshaken .

The use of the rafting hooks can still be seen today at demonstrations by rafting clubs, for example on the Ägerisee , canton Zug, drifting demonstrations in wild water, for example in the adventure world on the wood path in the Styrian Mendlingtal (near Lassing and Palfau in the Hochkar area), or in the wood drift and forest museum Schöpflklause near Vienna. Historical objects are exhibited in many rafting museums .

Coat of arms with the raftsman hook

In heraldry , the raftsman's hook is a mean figure . Often combined with other heraldic figures, the hook is possible with all heraldic possible colors in the coat of arms. The coats of arms show the local construction forms.
