The Fluffy beef mushroom ( Peniophorella pubera , Syn. : Hyphoderma puberum ) is a Ständerpilzart from the family of Fältlingsverwandten (Meruliaceae). It has carpet-like, membranous fruiting bodies of whitish color and grows on dead wood of deciduous trees , more rarely conifers . The species is distributed from Australia across Southeast Asia to large parts of the Holarctic .
features
Macroscopic features
The downy bark mushroom has resupinate , membranous-waxy fruiting bodies typical of the genus Peniophorella . They are whitish to ocher in color. Their hymenium is smooth under the naked eye, but reveals pores and protruding cystids under a magnifying glass . The fibrous edges of the fruiting bodies have no clear contours.
Microscopic features
As with all Peniophorella species, the hyphae structure of the downy bark fungus is monomitic , i.e. it only has generative hyphae . The 3–4 µm wide hyphae are hyaline , thick or thin-walled and heavily branched, the septa always have buckles . The subhymenial hyphae are perpendicular to the substrate. The cystids of the species are 60–150 × 10–18 µm in size and extend well beyond the fruit layer. The basidia are approximately club-shaped, have four sterigmata and measure 20–30 × 5–6 µm. They have a buckle at the base . Their spores are narrow ellipsoid and slightly curved, hyaline and thin-walled. They measure 7-10 × 3.5-5 µm, are inamyloid and always have an appendix ( apiculus ).
distribution
The known distribution of the species covers an area that extends from Australia to Southeast Asia to Eurasia , North Africa and North America . It prefers meridional and temperate climates in Europe.
ecology
The downy bark fungus grows all year round when the weather is suitable, especially on rotten dead wood of deciduous trees (more rarely conifers ), especially on oaks ( Quercus spp.) and alders ( Alnus spp.). It can usually be found in planar to submontane locations.
