Aviation cosmonaut of the Soviet Union

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The honorary title of Aviation Cosmonaut of the USSR ( Russian Лётчик-космонавт СССР ) was a state Soviet award in the field of space travel . It was donated in the form of a badge on April 14, 1961. The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR awarded the honorary title exclusively to cosmonauts who had successfully undertaken space flights . By 1991 the title was awarded to 72 cosmonauts. After that, the honorary title was replaced by the award of the Russian Federation's Aviation Cosmonaut.

Appearance and wearing style

Badge of the Soviet aviation cosmonauts

The badge, made of non-ferrous metal, has the shape of a pentagon and shows a globe with the outline of the Soviet Union on a black background , which is enamelled in red. Two golden satellites and a launcher with a long golden tail orbit the earth . This symbolism is enclosed at the lower edge of the badge by two laurel branches pointing upwards, which show the country code CCCP (USSR) in their middle and at the upper edge by the two words Летчик Космонавт ( aviator cosmonaut). The badge was worn on the right side of the chest and above any medals awarded on a golden rectangular clasp with a red ribbon.
