The knights and barons of Flondor are an Austrian noble family with origins in the Moldovan boyar class .

history

The Flondor family was one of the oldest Moldovan boyar families and has been represented at court by high dignitaries since the 15th century. Her ancestors were formerly called Albu, then Albotă and only took the name Flondor in the 18th century. The first documented ancestor was Mic Albu, who had moved from Maramures to the Principality of Moldova in 1403 . He was followed by his son, the cupbearer Albu (1432).

The first mention of the name Albotă appeared in a document dated July 15, 1520, in which the Grand Chamberlain Coste and his brothers Ioan and Sasca were confirmed their possessions by Prince Ștefăniță Vodă , a son of Stephen the Great (Ștefan cel Mare) . The ending -otă corresponds to the Romanian -escu and denotes the son of Albu. It belongs to the beginning of the Romanian name formation.

It also often happened that sons of different wives took on the family name of the respective mother, as happened with the sons of the Moldovan governor (from 1642) and Grand Marshal (1655) Pavel Albotă von Oniceni (1615–1680). Toader, Grand Prefect (1678), Court Marshal 1702, also Mayor of Chernivtsi (1693), named himself “Flondor” after his mother, his brother Gheorghiţă, chief military leader, again after his “Ciudin”.

Prince Gregor Ghica confirmed in 1730 the large basin bearer and district governor Șerban Flondor (1683–1768) on his request that his family had previously been called Albotă and in 1765 the brothers Johann and Toader Flondor, sons of Șerban, the boyarism.

The boyars Theodor and Ioan (Johann) Flondor also took part in the homage that took place in Chernivtsi on August 17, 1777 and swore the oath of allegiance to Austria. The sons of Johann (1710; † March 26, 1784), married to Nastasia Arapu, were Theodor, Basil, Konstantin, Georg and Demeter, who had received the knighthood on April 7, 1796 by the highest resolution of Emperor Franz II . They formed three branches of the family:

Demeter (Dimitrie) Knight of Flondor (1757–1825), married to Anița von Wassilko (1778–1851), daughter of the knight Nikolaus von Wassilko , founded the Cobălciu line, (Bukowina). Helene (Elena) von Flondor (born November 22, 1866 in Chernivtsi , † January 31, 1930 in Vienna ), his granddaughter, inherited Gut Mega and married the district commissioner Georg Freiherrn von Styrczea (1869-1897) in 1889 , and after an early death her first husband on July 3, 1898 in Czernowitz (Cernăuţi) the Count Anatol from Bigot de Saint-Quentin (1849 to 1932), imperial chamberlain , privy councilor , field Marshal Lieutenant , then general of cavalry .

Georg (Gheorghe) Ritter von Flondor (* 1761; † August 20, 1797), married to Anna von Stryszka (Strâşca) († July 4, 1854), created the line Hlinița (Bukowina). From the marriage of his son Jordaki (* January 3, 1798 - May 1, 1868) to Katharina von Gaffenko (* January 24, 1804 - August 17, 1849), five children emerged, including Katharina (* July 21, 1843 at the castle Hlinitza ; † December 27, 1920 in Chernivtsi ), married to the long-time governor of the Bukowina Alexander Freiherr Wassilko von Serecki (1827-1893).

This line is extinguished in the male line.

Constantin Ritter von Flondor (1764-1815), married to Paraschiva von Kalmucki, was the progenitor of the lines Storojineț (Bukowina) and Glinca (Bessarabia). Three of his grandchildren became known beyond the borders of Bukovina.

Theodor (Tudor) Ritter von Flondor (1862-1908) was an Austro-Romanian lawyer, economist, and politician, but primarily a conductor and composer, his eldest son Constantin a Romanian diplomat and royal court marshal .

Johann (Iancu) Ritter von Flondor (1865-1924) was a long-time member of the Bukovinian state parliament and, after the war, was instrumental in ensuring that Bukowina was awarded to the Kingdom of Romania . He was President of the Senate of the Romanian Government in Bukovina. Today many streets in Romania bear his name, including in Bucharest (Bucureşti) , Timisoara (Timişoara) , Iassy (Iaşi) and Suczeawa (Suceava) .

Nikolaus (Nicu) Freiherr von Flondor (1872–1948) was a member of the Bukovinian state parliament , the parliament of Greater Romania and three times mayor of Chernivtsi. He and his sons Radu and Alexander were given the status of baron.

Georg Ritter von Flondor , Romanian: Gheorghe cavaler de Flondor (1892-1976) was a politician and the last royal governor of Bucovina. Georg was the younger son of the politician and composer Theodor Ritter von Flondor and Maria Ciuntu, brother of Constantin von Flondor and nephew of the politicians Iancu and Nikolaus von Flondor.
