Theodore of Flondor
Theodor Ritter von Flondor , also Tudor von Flondor (born July 10, 1862 in Storozynetz (Storojineț) , † June 22, 1908 in Schlachtensee , Steglitz-Zehlendorf district ), was an Austro-Romanian lawyer , economist and musician , practicing conductor and composer from the Flondor family .
biography
The eldest son of Georg Ritter von Flondor and the well-known pianist Isabella Dobrowolski von Buchenthal (1835–1890), lord of Rogojeşti and Gura Molniţei, trained as a pianist from 1872 to 1879 with Adolphina Wohlfarth and from 1879 to 1883 in Czernowitz (Cernăuți ) trained as a violinist. After graduating from high school, he first studied law at the University of Chernivtsi (1882–1884), then until 1888 at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, economics. At the same time he enrolled at the local academy for music and performing arts with a focus on music theory and counterpoint and the study goal composer (until 1888). He studied at the Conservatory with Robert Fuchs , who was also the teacher of the young George Enescu . He also attended the Bayreuth Festival to familiarize himself with Wagner's music and went on a long trip to Italy.
As early as 1883/1884 he was vice-president of Junimea as well as choirmaster and conductor of the society "Armonia", later also from 1899 to 1906, in Chernivtsi. Theodor was also the choirmaster and conductor of the “România Jună” society (1885–1888), on whose anniversary Johann Strauss' orchestra also made a guest appearance . His achievements in this regard were also recognized by Crown Prince Rudolf on the occasion of his visit to Bukovina .
Every year he dedicates a waltz composition to the patrons of the Romanian ball in Vienna, for which he has always received great praise from the patron, Archduke Rainer .
In addition to his musical activities, as an economist, from 1904 he was also editor-in-chief of "Agricultorul", the Romanian edition of the Bukovina Cultural Council of the Bukovinaer agricultural papers . He was also a member of the Bukovinian state parliament and the Austrian Reichsrat (from 1901). Professor V. Nicolaiciuc said his credo was the peaceful coexistence of all ethnic groups in Bukovina, based on their respective cultures.
He wrote his last song "Tempi passati" while still on his deathbed in the Zehlendorf sanatorium "Fichtenhof", which he had visited because of a serious illness.
Flondor composed numerous Romanian operettas, choral works, serenades, but also instrumentals and vaudevilles . Musical echoes of Brahms and Wagner should also be recognizable in his works. Despite his rich work, many of his works have been forgotten today. His serenade “Somnoroase păsărele”, based on a poem by Mihai Eminescu , is played internationally .
The singer Constantin Şandru (1880–1956) founded the choral society "Tudor Flondor", which was particularly dedicated to the performances of the works of this composer.
In his honor, the first street in Chernivtsi was named after him in 1919; today one in Bucharest and the city library of Rădăuți bear his name.
