Florian Gengel (born June 27, 1834 in Churwalden ; † February 4, 1905 in Chur , reformed , resident in Churwalden) was a Swiss politician (FDP) , editor , printer, and hotelier .

biography

Florian Gengel was born on June 27, 1834 in Churwalden as the son of Lieutenant Colonel , lawyer and politician Cyprian Gengel. After attending the Chur Cantonal School, Gengel began studying law , economics and literature in Zurich , Tübingen and Munich . Florian Gengel subsequently worked as a lawyer in Chur. In addition, he worked as an editor for the “Liberal Alpine Messenger” and from 1861 to 1867 for the Bund in Bern .

In 1868 he founded the liberal newspaper “Der Freie Rhätier” . Florian Gengel was the owner of printing works in Chur and St. Moritz as well as the hotel "Hof St. Moritz" . He also served as Secretary General of the Swiss Hotel Association. In the 1890s, Gengel struggled with financial problems.

He was married to Anna, the daughter of Friedrich Giger from Gontenschwil . Florian Gengel died on February 4, 1905 at the age of 70 in Chur.

Political career

The free-spirited politician initially acted as Chur city ​​council and as a mediator. In the years 1869 to 1883, 1885 to 1889 and 1891 to 1893 he was represented in the Grisons Grand Council . He also served as a cantonal judge between 1870 and 1872. In addition, Gengel belonged to the Council of States from 1874 to 1879 , which he presided over from December 2, 1878 to June 2, 1879 .

Florian Gengel made a name for himself as a railway, tourism and school politician. In the 1870s and 1880s he was one of the leading representatives of the free-thinking camp in Graubünden and was committed to a constitutional revision and direct democracy , among other things . Around 1880 he finally switched from radical democratic to liberal positions.
