Soccer World Cup 2010 / Netherlands
This article covers the Dutch national team at the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa .
The runner-up from 1974 and 1978 made the new attempt at the world championship title with Bondscoach Bert van Marwijk , who had replaced Marco van Basten after the EM 2008 . Oranje was the first team from Europe to qualify on June 6th, 2009. After the convincing preliminary round of the European Championship (EM) and the disappointing end in the quarter-finals, the qualification for the World Cup once again aroused great expectations. In the country that had been settled by the Dutch since the middle of the 17th century , the second international title should finally be won. For the draw, the Dutch team was surprisingly set as one of the group heads. The FIFA departed from their last practiced system under which the rankings in recent international tournaments were included in the ranking, and depended on the world rankings, where the Dutch team were out at the time of the draw to third. They were thus given preference over France and Portugal . They were drawn from Denmark from Europe , Japan from Asia and Cameroon from Africa . Denmark was the penultimate opponent before the Euro 2008; back then there was a 1-1 draw in Eindhoven ; the Japanese defeated Oranje 3-0 in their first meeting in September 2009; Cameroon last played in Rotterdam in May 2006 when they won 1-0. At the beginning of March 2010, the KNVB extended van Marwijk's contract by two years until after the European Championships in 2012 , also to ensure certainty and calm in the team in this regard. In March 2010, the bond coach saw his team as one of the title candidates alongside “ Spain , Brazil and outsider England ”. It was like in 2002 with the then UEFA Cup winner Feyenoord : Back then, “we didn't have the best players, but we certainly had the best team”.
The direct preparations for the World Cup began on May 10, 2010 in Hoenderloo . First eighteen players came together for joint training. From May 19 to 31, 2010, the entire provisional squad went to a training camp in Seefeld , Austria , during which the team won an international match against World Cup participants Mexico in Freiburg thanks to two goals from Van Persies 2-1. Further preparation games will follow in early June against Germany 's group opponents Ghana and Hungary .
qualification
The Dutch were able to secure first place in their qualification group 9 without losing points. The team showed itself to be perfectly fit in the games, especially on the defensive; only in Macedonia and Iceland the opponent was able to record its own hit. Also in the friendly games of the seasons 2008/09 and 2009/10 the performance of the defense was a guarantee that since the first game against Australia (1: 2) until the end of 2009 no game was lost; however, the last three games of 2009, again against the Socceroos and against Italy and Paraguay , all ended 0-0.

Dutch contingent
On May 11, 2010, national coach Bert van Marwijk announced his preliminary 30-man squad. With his line-up, he put an end to rumors of Ruud van Nistelrooy's comeback . The appointments of Jeremain Lens and Vurnon Anita , who neither had previously played in the senior national team, came as a bit of a surprise . At the end of the first training phase in Hoenderloo , the Bondscoach cut the three midfielders Otman Bakkal , Wout Brama and David Mendes da Silva . Four other outfield players were canceled on May 27 after the friendly against Mexico: in addition to the two newcomers Anita and Lens, these were Orlando Engelaar and Ron Vlaar .
